You Kept Me Waiting While Loving Her 1 Chapter 06
Wyatt went quiet on the other end for a long time.
Then I heard him grind his teeth and mutter, “You want to keep this up? Fine, we’ll see how it goes. Without my referral, how do you plan to get into the Blackwell Group with your average college background?”
Back when I changed my college plans for him, Wyatt had been full of guilt.
His eyes had been red when he held my hand and made me a promise. “How could you be so stupid? Don’t worry. The top company in New York will always have a spot for you. I’m never letting you be far from me.”
Looking back now, I really had been stupid. Plenty of well-known enterprises reached out to me near graduation, yet I turned every single offer down because of his words.
If that company in San Francisco hadn’t persisted in recruiting me, I would’ve really had nowhere to go.
Tired of listening to his pointless outbursts, I blocked this number of his too.
The next day, I pulled myself together and went to report to my new job.
The moment I stepped into the CEO’s office, I saw a familiar face.
“Long time no see, Alaia.”
I never expected to run into Axel Kensington here.
The first time we met, he was a guest lecturer at my school. I was standing in front of him as the top student,
ready to present.
Thankfully, I’d always kept up with my independent studies. I answered every question he threw at me
without stumbling.
Before he left, he asked if I’d consider coming to work for his company in San Francisco after graduation.
“With your grades, you could have gone to a much better school. I don’t know why you chose this one, but I’m offering you a pretty good future.”
“And… I grew up abroad. I like being direct. I like you, and I respect your abilities. I’d like to spend more time with you.”
Back then, his bluntness caught me off guard. Academia had no shortage of people trading favors for… other
things. The richer they were, the better they were at playing games with people’s feelings.
I shut him down hard. I told him that kind of behavior was disgusting and that I already had a boyfriend I was
very happy with.
It wasn’t until I got back to my dorm that I heard my roommates talking about Axel. They said he was a
billionaire and still single, the perfect eligible bachelor.
I felt rather awkward, only realizing belatedly that I’d misunderstood him all along.
By the time I tried to apologize, he’d already flown off to another city.
I took a deep breath and placed my resume on his desk.
“No wonder this company insisted on hiring me so firmly. It turns out it’s you. I was young and reckless back then, I truly didn’t know any better…”
Axel was calm and composed, pouring me a cup of coffee gently.
“Don’t worry about it. I was being rather presumptuous at that time. Putting personal matters aside, you’re undeniably talented, so I was determined to bring you on board.”
“I’d assumed you would say no without hesitation. Was your sudden acceptance due to breaking up with him?”
When he saw that I didn’t deny it, he let the subject drop without another word.
He opened his drawer and handed me a business card for a private physician.
“This ophthalmologist is a friend of mine. He can take a look at your mother’s eyes.”
Thankfully, Axel didn’t bring up the past again.
Slowly, I started settling into my new life.
When I took my mom to see the doctor, I was terrified of giving her hope only to snatch it away again.
But when he said she still had some light perception and that surgery might be an option, I couldn’t hold back
my tears.
Suddenly, life felt full again. I threw myself into my new work while helping my mom prepare for her
procedure.
I was no longer the bitter woman who waited at home forever. Finally, I was allowed to shine for myself.
What I didn’t expect was another call from New York.
Not from Wyatt.
From Reese.
