My Boyfriend’s Weekend Escape Was With My Best Friend Chapter 03

In the end, the hospital refused to let me donate for safety reasons.

Jason said coldly, “You’re so cold. When Chloe found out you needed blood, her first instinct was to donate. But you don’t care if she lives or dies.”

“The doctor said they could bring in backup blood right away. Weren’t you the one who said waiting was fine?”

Jason’s face darkened, probably remembering his own words. He turned away with a cold snort and stopped talking to me.

Three hours later, they finally wheeled Chloe out of the ICU. I waited outside the emergency room doors, but they blocked everything.

I sat alone, curled up with my head on my knees, until a nurse tapped my shoulder.

I looked up. She stared at me in surprise. “Your friend’s going to be fine. You don’t have to cry so hard.”

I touched my face. It was wet.

The nurse handed me a form. “The deluxe double room for your friend is all set. Your boyfriend said to have you pay and handle the paperwork. Once she’s out of the ER, you can move her right in.”

I looked at the total on the bill: thirty-eight hundred dollars.

I stood up and walked into Jason’s room. He was propped up in bed, drinking water. When he saw me, he asked, “Did you take care of it?”

I put the bill in front of him. “Thirty-eight hundred dollars. That’s almost half of what I make in a year.”

Jason glanced at it like it was nothing. “Chloe got seriously hurt. And I’m in the hospital too. What’s wrong with wanting a better room? All you care about is money. You’re obsessed with it.”

He pulled out a debit card and held it out to me. “You make such a big deal over a nicer room. If you don’t want to spend your money, use mine.”

Jason and I had been together for five years.

We’d gone from making three thousand a month to living a little more comfortably. We’d saved up five thousand dollars, which we planned to use for the wedding.

I looked down at the engagement ring on my finger. It cost less than a thousand dollars, with a diamond the size of a pinhead. But in that moment, it felt unbearably sharp against my skin.

Back then, he held me and said life was hard and money was tight. I comforted him. “Then give me a small ring when you propose. It’s the thought that counts.”

Now I understood. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

I took the card. I went to handle the admission and swiped it.

When I got back to the room, the doctor was discussing treatment options with Jason. I stood to the side and listened.

“This medication is imported, so it’s much more expensive. But it’s the most effective and has the fewest side effects.”

I didn’t hesitate. “Of course we should go with the expensive one. Don’t you think?”

I looked at Jason. He stared back in surprise, clearly confused why I suddenly cared about Chloe again.

But he nodded. “Of course.”

I turned to the doctor. “Could you write the prescription? I’ll go pay.”
