The Hollow Luna Who Got Betrayed Chapter 08
Julia seemned to be falling apart. She shouted weakly, “Lucas, what did you do to me? What did you take from me? No wonder I’ve felt my body getting worse and worse. Did you take one of my kidneys, too?”
Lucas rose expressionlessly and stood in front of my bed. “Nothing was taken from you. You were only returning what belonged to its rightful owner. We committed unforgivable sins against her, and now we have to atone. Your body is rejecting her womb because her wolf is taking revenge for her.”
“What atonement? I want to live. I want to live! My mother gave birth to her so she could be used as spare
parts for me. Her wolf was meant to serve mine!”
Julia grabbed Lucas’s shirt and clutched her chest as she murmured in accusation, “Lucas, was I the only one who hurt her? What price have you paid? Your Alpha mark has already been erased. What more do you
want?”
The man said coldly, “Once she recovers, I’ll turn myself in.”
“Turn yourself in? So you really did fall in love with her. You’re actually willing to go this far for her. Then what about me? Back then, you kept saying you would take care of me for the rest of my life. You said your
wolf recognized only me!”
With despair on her face, Julia lunged toward me. “This is all your fault! Go die. If you die, he’ll love me properly again. Once your wolf is dead, my body will be able to accept your organs!”
She screamed hysterically as if she had used up the last of her strength. It took Lucas and several medical Betas together to restrain her.
The next second, she fainted.
Audrey wailed beside them, begging Lucas to save Julia, but his face remained indifferent. He only ordered the medical staff coldly to carry Julia out.
When the farce ended, I finally had a moment of peace.
As Lucas peeled an apple for me, he asked lightly, “Do you want her dead, or do you want her to keep barely
living like this?”
His tone was so casual it was as if he were asking me to decide whether an ant lived or died. Once, he had
stood at the top of the pack. Now that his wolf mark had been stripped away, even his hatred had become cheap.
A chill spread through my heart. With Lucas, devotion and cruelty were only ever one thought apart. Whoever believed in his love was doomed.
I tightened my grip on the edge of the blanket and said coldly, “Whether she lives or dies has nothing to do with me. I want no part in whatever happens to her. Don’t drag me into your mess. My wolf doesn’t want anything to do with any of you anymore.”
He held out the peeled apple to me. “Are you afraid of me? Do you think I’m cruel? I just don’t want them
coming back to disturb your peace after I turn myself in.”
I did not want to take it. “Thank you, but I really don’t need you committing crimes for me. I just want you
to break the mate bond with me, and then we can each go live our own lives.”
He let out a soft laugh and took a bite of the apple himself. Emotions I could not understand surged in his
dark eyes.
They were burning and intense.
With red-rimmed eyes, he asked, “After I accept my punishment and atone for what I’ve done, can we start
over?”
“No.”
I looked at him calmly, without hatred, and spoke in an even voice.
“Sometimes I think that during those three years when you pretended to love me, you did let me feel a kind of warmth. My life was already terrible before I met you, so I can’t put all the blame on one person.”
“I don’t hate you anymore, but I will never love you again. If you lie beside me, I’ll have nightmares. My wolf may be close to death, but it still remembers. It remembers every time you called me by the wrong name.”
A bleak, bitter smile tugged at the man’s lips. Then he rose, opened the door, and left.
Not long after he went out, chaos suddenly erupted outside, as if something terrible had happened.
Several nurses hurried in and, without giving me a chance to object, helped me into a wheelchair.
“Where are you taking me?”
“Mr. Bennett is fading fast and wants to see you one last time. Claire, please go see him.”
“How is that possible?” My first instinct was that they were lying to me. He had been standing in front of me moments ago, begging for forgiveness. How could he suddenly be dying?
The nurse explained quickly, “Julia just passed away. Her mother, Audrey, seemed to lose her mind. She took
a silver dagger and stabbed Mr. Bennett several times.”
In the emergency room, Lucas lay there covered in blood. Blood kept pouring from his lower abdomen, as if nothing could stop it.
The moment I entered, he looked straight at me and reached out a bloodstained hand.
I froze for a few seconds, then took it.
Blood kept spilling from his mouth as he struggled to speak. “If I die, will it cancel out my sins?”
I nodded.
“I’m donating all of my organs. If I do something good, will you come to my grave every year to see me? My wolf may be gone, but I want… someone to remember me.”
I nodded again.
He smiled in satisfaction, and the strength in his hand gradually loosened.
Two months later, Noah and I went to visit Lucas’s grave.
Lucas’s heart had ultimately been transplanted into Noah. I did not know whether it was only a coincidence or whether Lucas had designated him as the recipient himself. No one knew what would happen when an Alpha’s heart was transplanted into a Rogue’s body.
Noah placed a bouquet of flowers before Lucas’s grave marker, then turned to me with a smile. “My heart always beats faster when I see you. I don’t know whether it’s because of him or because of me.”
“That guy really was cunning, He made sure you’d never forget him for the rest of your life.”
I looked at the black-and-white portrait on Lucas’s grave marker and felt as if the past few months had stretched as long as half a lifetime.
All the love and hatred of the past had scattered with the wind. In the end, my wolf survived. It was still
weak, but it no longer howled for anyone.
Later, Noah and I remained friends for the rest of our lives. We never sealed the mate bond. We supported each other until old age. When his heart hurt, I went with him to the pack hospital. When my body gave out,
he went with me to the sea.
Neither of us became the other’s vessel. Instead, we each became someone the other could rely on.
