The Heir He Left Behind Chapter 05
When I woke up, I saw blinding white light and heard a steady beep, beep, beep.
I reached for my stomach, but a gentle hand stopped me.
“Cassie, don’t worry. The baby’s fine.”
“Who are you?” I stared at the middleaged woman.
She was dressed oddly, and her English had an accent. I felt like I’d seen her before, but I couldn’t remember
where.
“The Don already knows. He’s on a flight to New York.” She tucked my blanket. “Want some water?”
I nodded. It took my slow brain a moment. The Don? Which Don?
Could it be… him?
But we’d agreed. No interference. No contact.
Of course, I was the one who broke the rule. I was pregnant.
But I hadn’t planned to depend on him.
He once offered me money. I didn’t take it. I didn’t want to owe him that much.
Depending on a man – your whole life turning on his mood. One flick of his finger, and you fall into hell.
Honestly, I never wanted that life again.
After the nurse fed me, I drifted back to sleep. It wasn’t restful. I dreamed of Landon.
He sat on a sofa in a grand living room, lighting a cigar with a jet lighter.
I stood there for a long time before he finally looked up.
“Cassie Moretti.”
His eyes were still distant. Cold. Looking into them felt like staring through thick fog.
My back was drenched. My belly stuck out.
“Who gave you the nerve to steal my child?”
“Landon, I didn’t. I took the medicine you gave me. Ask the staff. Check the cameras.” My voice cracked.
“Please.”
He didn’t believe me. He waved his hand, signaling his bodyguard.
“Landon, please…”
I woke up screaming his name in the empty hospital room.
“What nightmare did you have?” a deep voice asked. “Crying like a little girl.”
Through my tears, I saw a man’s face.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit and sat by my bed, wiping my tears with a silk handkerchief.
I stared at him, tears falling. “Landon?”
