The day Lorraine passed the pack’s aptitude exam, my Alpha mate and I took her to the marketplace in Ashenwood.
She had just been hired as a clerk for the council, and we wanted to help her get ready for her first day.
A truth challenge was being held in the marketplace that day.
Any werewolf couple that passed the test could get their purchases for free-as long as they kissed in public.
The very first participant selected was James, the current Alpha of Aurorun Pack and the man who had been my mate for the past seven years.
During the challenge, the witch asked if either of us had ever fallen for another werewolf.
James and I both answered no at the same time.
The truth stone in front of me remained completely still.
James’s truth stone suddenly began to vibrate.
The crowd of onlooking werewolves immediately burst into laughter.
“Are they even in love? She clearly likes the Alpha, but it looks like his heart belongs to someone else.”
“Right? Didn’t he show up with two she-wolves? The other one’s probably who he really likes.”
Amid the cheering and teasing from the pack members, the witch invited Lorraine onto the stage.
She asked whether they liked each other.
Without the slightest hesitation, both of them answered no.
The moment the words left their mouths, the truth stones in front of them erupted into loud rattling.
The crowd instantly erupted, screaming and cheering for them to kiss.
My phone buzzed with a message from James.
[Everyone’s watching. I can’t embarrass Lorraine in front of the whole pack. I’ll explain when we get home.]
I stood frozen, watching them lock into a passionate kiss on stage, surrounded by cheers and blessings.

James and Lorraine stood at the center of the crowd.
The audience below and the comments on the giant livestream screen had descended into complete chaos, flooded with blessings and congratulations.
I lowered my phone, where comments were still racing across the screen, and looked toward the two people standing beneath the spotlight.
Without thinking, James stepped in front of Lorraine, shielding her from the crowd.
His voice was cold. “Stop. We’re not mates.’
Lorraine bit her lower lip, carrying the fragile vulnerability unique to an Omega.
“Please, stop. Alpha was only following the challenge rules.”
The witch walked over with a smile.
“We may have set up this challenge, but the truth stones don’t lie. We’re just helping true love along.”
Another wave of cheers erupted from the audience.
A wandering spotlight accidentally landed on me.
That was when the other werewolves finally seemed to notice me.
“What about the she-wolf who went on stage with Alpha earlier? The truth stone showed she’s never had eyes for anyone but him.”
The voice wasn’t loud, but it carried clearly enough for everyone present to hear.
“I know, right? The poor thing’s totally devoted. Too bad Alpha’s probably already got a future Luna in mind.”
Laughter swept through the crowd.
On stage, James didn’t even glance in my direction.
He was carefully picking fallen confetti from Lorraine’s hair.
Someone had to point me out before he finally turned his attention to me.
His voice was deliberately low and dismissive.
“Relax. It was just a game.”
“I’ll announce our mate bond eventually-everyone will know you’re Luna.”
The laughter around us grew even louder, as though it might shake the trees of the forest itself.
“She’s not that young anymore. Why’s she so jealous of an Omega?”
“Because she wants to cling to Alpha and become our pack’s Luna.”
“Alpha and that Omega look like the real deal anyway.”
“Just look at how he stares at her. I bet he’s already marked her.”
