I was the favor he refused to see Chapter 06
When I returned to my desk, the smell of the stew still hadn’t faded from the office.
Lily walked over with her phone. “Ivy, could you take another look at the Project B proposal for me?”
I was about to refuse, but she had already unlocked her screen.
The first thing that popped up was a photo.
A golden-brown dog lay on the floor, blood pooling beside its head.
My fingers went rigid.
“Oh no, sorry, Ivy. I didn’t mean to show you something that bloody.”
“I went to Mr. Langford’s place last night to ask him about work. I called it over, but it wouldn’t listen and kept barking at me. I lost control and hit it in the head with a vase…’
She paused, her tone light and careless. “So I killed it.”
I stared at the photo. Buddy’s eyes were still open.
“Mr. Langford said since it was already dead, we might as well have a chef turn it into stew.”
“I still have some here. Do you want a bite?”
I was so furious that I slapped her across the face. Her phone flew out of her hand and hit the floor.
The entire office turned to look.
Ethan heard the commotion and rushed out of the conference room.
“Ivy!”
I didn’t look at him.
I stared at Lily.
“You ate him?”
She hunched her shoulders, tears falling instantly. “Ivy, it wasn’t even your dog. Why would you hit me?”
“Enough.” Ethan grabbed my wrist. “It was just a dog. Are you seriously making such a big deal out of it?”
I turned to look at him.
“What did you just say?”
He frowned, then lowered his voice and coaxed me by my ear. “I’ll buy you another one. Stop makin a scene.”
Was I really making such a big deal out of it?
He knew Buddy was the little dog I had raised for almost eight years.
Employee housing didn’t allow pets. I had wanted to rent another place on my own, but he wouldn’t let me.
That was why I had left Buddy at his place.
And now Buddy had become someone else’s lunch.
“Ethan,” I said, “he was my child.”
He froze.
It was not because I was crying.
It was because it was the first time I had ever called him by his full name in the office.
I shook off his hand and left the company.
After disappearing for an entire day, I returned to the office the next morning to pack my things.
Ethan walked over and handed me the staffing list for a new project.
“I’m giving you one more chance to redeem yourself…”
“This is a new project from Newport Beach. You’ll handle execution.”
