I Was The Favor He Refused To See Chapter 07
I was just about to refuse when he added, “But Lily will be listed as the project lead.”
I paused and looked at the list. “Why?”
“She needs the performance record,” Ethan said flatly. “You don’t need empty credit like that.”
I laughed.
It was the first time he had ever seen that kind of smile on my face.
His brows drew together slightly. “What are you laughing at?”
“Mr. Langford, when I ask for a promotion and a raise, it’s called ‘not enough seniority’ and ‘eredit built on company resources.’ When she gets listed as project lead, it’s called ‘needing the performance record.’ You make the rules, so I understand. I’ll execute the project.”
As for what capacity I would be executing it in, that was none of his business.
For once, Ethan said something in the office that sounded like the way he spoke in private. “Ivy, I’m glad you’re being this sensible.”
After I walked out of his office and finished the last of my paperwork, I went straight to the airport.
Ethan almost never came to the employee housing.
He stood downstairs for a while and sent a message from his personal number.
Ethan: [Still mad? It’s our anniversary. Let me take you somewhere nice for dinner.]
When the text came back as Not Delivered, he realized she had blocked his personal number too.
He let out a scoff and was about to go upstairs, only to realize that after all these years, he didn’t even know which floor she lived on.
His phone rang just then.
Lily was crying on the other end, saying there was a mouse in her apartment.
He looked at the building in front of him, then turned and left.
After dealing with the mouse, he stared at his phone, which still had no messages from Ivy, and his chest felt painfully tight.
He had planned to propose to her on their anniversary.
But even now, she was still throwing a tantrum.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He had a few too many drinks and fell asleep.
For the next three days in a row, Ivy didn’t come to the office.
Cole asked worriedly, “Ethan, the meeting with the Newport Beach client is at eight tonight. The client is coming because of Ivy. If she isn’t there…”
“She’ll come.”
He knew Ivy too well.
She was softhearted, sentimental, and almost painfully responsible.
No one knew better than him how much she had given for the company to get this far.
There was no way she would truly let go.
He had already decided that as long as she performed well tonight and landed the project, he could make an exception and promote her.
He would treat it as proof that he was willing to make it up to her.
In the private dining room for the meeting, Ethan leaned back in his chair.
His fingers tapped the table every now and then.
He glanced at his watch.
It was 7:58 p.m.
Cole sat beside him, visibly restless.
Lily deliberately fanned the flames. “Looks like Ivy has made up her mind not to come. How irresponsible.”
The moment she finished speaking, the door opened.
“Who said I wasn’t coming?”
