I sat in the study all night.
The next day, I took the day off and asked my best friend Sophie to come help me cancel the wedding.
“Emma, are you sure about this?” Sophie asked the moment she saw me.
“I’m sure.”
“You and Caleb have been together for seven years, and the wedding is the day after tomorrow. You’re really not going to wait for him to get back, just call it off on your own?”
“Yeah.”
“Does Caleb know?”
“He’s busy.”
“Busy with what?”
I didn’t answer.
Sophie was quiet for a couple of seconds. “If you don’t want to tell him, I’ll call him myself. You two have been together seven years. I’m not going to let you handle something this big alone-”
“He’s busy getting married,” I said quietly.
Sophie froze, her disapproving expression stuck on her face. “What did you say?”
I smiled and pulled out the chat logs I had saved from Caleb’s computer the night before, then showed her.
“Caleb got married yesterday in Cancun. To Jessica Hartwell, his first love.”
Sophie was silent. Then her eyes slowly turned red.
“I remember you were at the hotel rehearsing with the lighting crew until midnight yesterday. You texted me that your stomach hurt and asked me to pick up medicine for you.”
She paused. “That whole time… Caleb was in Cancun marrying another woman?”
I forced a smile. “Yeah.”
Sophie didn’t say another word. She drove me straight to the wedding venue, holding my hand the whole way, tight.
