I Signed The Divorce And Never Signed Back In Chapter 07
When I woke up, Alexander was sitting by my bed.
He held my hand, kissing it over and over, rubbing it against his cheek.
Hot tears landed on my skin. It made my chest ache.
I smiled and reached up to wipe his face.
“What are you crying about? Don’t be stupid.”
“Ellie, you scared me to death.” He pressed his forehead against mine.
“The doctor said the baby’s fine. We got here in time. But you need to be more careful from now on. I’m hiring bodyguards.”
I touched my stomach gently. Alexander and I had tried for a year to have this baby. Thank God nothing happened.
Then I sighed. Alexander had wanted to give me bodyguards before. I didn’t want them following me around. I felt like I was being watched too much.
Just as I was about to say something, someone knocked on the door.
Alexander’s assistant walked in. “Sir, there’s a couple outside asking to see Mrs. Cole.”
“Jason Harrington?”
The assistant nodded. I waved my hand.
“I don’t want to see them.”
I had just come out of surgery. I didn’t have the energy to deal with those two.
Alexander smiled at me. “Ellie, I already bought the estate. Do you want to go see it together?”
“Yes.”
My parents had been forced to sell the estate to pay off debts. My mother made me promise to buy it back one day. I’d finally done it.
I stared at the ceiling. For a second, I thought I saw my mother smiling.
“Mom, do you see this? I’m really happy now. Don’t worry about me.”
Alexander had the estate completely restored. We stayed there for a few days.
The auction house sent me the security footage from that night.
Jason hadn’t physically hurt me, so there was no case against him.
But Kimberly couldn’t get out of it.
When the police went to the Harrington house to arrest her, Kimberly was hysterical. She clung to Jason’s arm.
“Baby, I can’t go to jail. I’m carrying your child. You have to save me.”
So Jason came begging to me.
He looked terrible. His face was haggard. Stubble covered his jaw. His bright eyes were bloodshot.
He still couldn’t believe it. “Ellie. Are you really married to Alexander Cole?”
The words came out slow. Like each one was a blade scraping up his throat.
I held up my left hand. The diamond caught the light.
“You’re looking at it.”
“Why? We were supposed to be together forever. How could you marry someone else?”
“Do you know I can’t even sleep anymore? Every time I close my eyes, all I see is you. You married someone else. You’re having his baby. I can’t stand it.”
Jason held his head in his hands, his eyes red at the corners.
I didn’t look up. My voice was flat.
“What about you? You said you’d never hurt me. That you’d love me forever.”
“Promises are just air, Jason. You should know that better than anyone.”
Every sweet word he ever said to me had turned into a slap in the face. They had shattered me into pieces.
“You’re right. This is my fault. I got lost. I was an idiot.”
Jason bent low, his eyes broken and desperate.
“But I never wanted to leave you, Ellie. You know you’re the only one I’ve ever really loved. I spent two years thinking about you. I regret what I did every single day.”
