I Saw Two Faces In My Husband’s Heart Chapter 05

Samantha arrived exactly twenty minutes after I called her at nine that evening.

Seeing the documents neatly arranged on the table, she didn’t ask a single question. She simply picked up my packed suitcase and carried it down to her car.

As we cleared the gates of the residential community, my phone illuminated. A text from Ethan appeared: [Her fever is dangerously high, so I’m waiting with her at the clinic while she receives an IV. Regarding what you mentioned, we’ll sit down and have a proper conversation tomorrow.]

Samantha kept her eyes on the road, adjusting her grip on the steering wheel. “Where are we going?”

“Your place first, if that’s alright.”

“Where is he?”

“At a clinic, waiting with someone else.”

Samantha bit her lip, keeping the rest of her thoughts to herself. I leaned my head against the cool glass of the passenger window, placing my hand over my stomach — over the hollow space where a life had been just hours before.

Your father didn’t miss your arrival, little one, I thought silently. He simply decided that someone else’s fever was a far more pressing matter.

The following afternoon, my phone rang. It was Ethan. I picked up.

“Christina, you’re not at the apartment,” his voice sounded raw, stripped of its usual composure. “What is the meaning of the document on the coffee table?”

“It’s an ultrasound report, Ethan. Your child.”

The line fell completely silent for several seconds. “You mentioned a pregnancy last night…”

“And now it’s gone.”

“Chris… I didn’t know. I honestly thought you were just asking me to accompany you for a standard check-up. Amber was genuinely in critical condition —”

“I know,” I interrupted, my voice entirely devoid of emotion. “I know her temperature was exactly one hundred and one point three; you heard that perfectly clear. My pregnancy was at six weeks, but somehow, you didn’t manage to hear that part. You told me to wait until you returned, and the only thing you left me with was the view of your back.”

He offered no defense.

“Ethan, when you walked out that door last night, did you turn around to look at me even once?”

Only the sound of his ragged breathing came through the speaker.

“No,” I whispered. “You didn’t look back a single time.”

I ended the call.

Samantha emerged from the kitchen holding two glasses of water, setting them down on the table with a sharp thud. “What did he say?”

“He said her fever was very high.”

She slammed her fist lightly onto the counter. “He’s an absolute monster.”

“He didn’t lose his mind,” I replied quietly, looking out at the city streets. “He simply chose to give his priority to someone else.”
