He Chose His Comrade’s Widow Over Our Child’s Birthday Chapter 08

Three days later.

The fire department held its annual public commendation ceremony.

The auditorium was packed with city officials, reporters, firefighters, and victims’ families.

Vivian sat proudly in the front row reserved for family members of fallen heroes.

Today, she was scheduled to speak onstage as the widow of a deceased firefighter and receive a massive compensation check.

Her face wore a mask of grief, but greed flickered unmistakably in her eyes.

The host finished the opening remarks and announced loudly:

“Please welcome Captain Julian Thorne to the stage to present Ms. Vivian Rhodes with her survivor compensation award!”

Thunderous applause filled the auditorium.

Julian walked slowly toward the stage with a microphone in hand.

But he wasn’t carrying the envelope containing the check.

Vivian stood immediately, anticipation flashing across her face. She approached him, already preparing to force tears into her eyes for the cameras.

Julian raised the microphone.

His cold gaze swept across the room.

“I do have something to give Ms. Vivian Rhodes today,” he said evenly. “But it’s not compensation money.”

He turned toward the sound booth and gave a signal.

The giant screen behind them lit up.

Then the recording began to play.

“Marriage?”

“His wife ran off, and he’s drowning in guilt…”

“As long as he still feels guilty about Caleb, all I have to do is cry a little and he’ll stay my personal

ATM forever…”

“That little brat should’ve died in there.”

“Julian Thorne is such a pathetic idiot… Men like him deserve to die alone!”

The entire auditorium went dead silent.

Then chaos exploded.

The fire department executives in the front row shot to their feet in fury. Firefighters throughou the audience stood up one after another, glaring at Vivian in disgust.

Vivian’s face turned completely white.

Her legs gave out beneath her as she collapsed onto the stage, shaking uncontrollably.

“No… no, that’s fake!” she screamed. “Julian, please listen to me! He forced me to say those things! I didn’t mean any of it!”

She tried grabbing Julian’s leg.

Julian stepped back immediately.

At that moment, the auditorium doors burst open.

Several police officers strode inside and headed straight for the stage.

“Vivian Rhodes,” one officer announced, “you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, falsifying medical records, and financial deception.”

Handcuffs snapped around her wrists.

Every fake tear, every helpless expression, every carefully crafted lie shattered instantly.

As the officers dragged her away, Vivian suddenly twisted around and screamed at Julian hysterically.

“Don’t stand there acting righteous now, Julian Thorne! Did I force you to abandon your daughter? Did I hold a gun to your head and make you save me first?”

“You’re the one who wanted to play the hero! You’re the one who left your own daughter behind!”

“You’re just as guilty for what happened to Mia! You helped destroy her life too! You’ll never wash that blood off your hands!”

Each word stabbed straight into Julian’s chest.

And the worst part was…

She was right.

Vivian had been cruel.

Manipulative.

Vicious.

But she had only been an outsider.

The person who truly failed Mia… was him.

The person who handed the knife to others… was him.

Vivian was taken away in handcuffs.

As for Leo, authorities confirmed he had never suffered from asthma. Because his mother was facing serious criminal charges, he was transferred into state custody.

The commendation ceremony ended in complete disgrace.

Long after everyone else had left, Julian remained standing alone inside the empty auditorium.

Slowly, he removed his captain’s hat.

Then he took off his uniform.

He walked toward his superiors, bowed deeply, and handed over his resignation letter.

“I don’t deserve to wear this uniform anymore.”

Stripped of his honor, his family, and every ounce of pride he once had, Julian Thorne began the long road toward finding his wife and daughter…

And begging for forgiveness.
