The Comments Called Me Ruined and I Called Bluff Chapter 07
As the days went by, the house began to feel more and more like a real home.
The breakfast table no longer featured a full spread just for me—there were three identical portions set out now.
Sadie had finally said goodbye to her days of plain oatmeal and buns.
“Ha! Bacon! Two slices!”
“Don’t just eat the meat. Have some vegetables too.”
“I know, Cyrus, if you’re not drinking your milk, give it to me.”
“You have your own.”
“I finished mine!”
Cyrus shoved his glass of milk over without an expression.
Sadie grabbed it like she’d found buried treasure and took a huge gulp.
[Sadie really can pack it away.]
[Cyrus acts so cold but he gives in every single time. Every. Single. Time.]
That afternoon, I was cleaning out the room the imposter had used.
The things she had left behind stacked up against an entire wall—designer bags, haute couture dresses, and jewelry, all clearly worth a fortune.
Sadie leaned against the doorframe, watching me, “Nicole, what are you going to do with all this stuff?”
“Sell it.”
“All of it?”
“Is there anything in here you want?”
She scanned the room and shook her head, “No. Just looking at it makes me uncomfortable.”
I smiled, “Then we’ll sell it all and donate the money.”
“Donate it where?”
“You pick a place.”
Sadie tilted her head, thinking it over, “Then… let’s give it to an animal rescue. I saw one recently that was desperately short on funding.”
“Sounds good.”
She gave a happy little hop, running over to wrap her arms around my elbow, “You’re the best, Nicole!”
[The imposter spent three years hoarding all this stuff, and the real Nicole donates it all with one sentence.]
[Class! Now that is pure class!]
Halfway through sorting the items, I found a small box tucked away in the very back of the closet.
I opened it up. It was full of my old things.
An old photo album, a few lipsticks, and a bracelet.
The bracelet was a gift Sadie had given me for my birthday when she was ten, bought with three months’ worth of saved allowance.
She had been so nervous back then, her face flushing red as she handed it over, “Nicole, happy birthday. It… it wasn’t expensive, but I spent a really long time picking it out.”
I had worn it constantly, right up until the imposter arrived and it mysteriously vanished.
Turns out it had been stuffed in here.
Sadie’s eyes welled up with tears the moment she spotted the bracelet. “She… she actually didn’t throw it away.”
“She probably just thought it wasn’t worth anything and didn’t bother handling it.”
Sadie huffed, “It really wasn’t worth much, but that was…”
She paused. “That was my gift to you, Nicole.”
I slipped the bracelet back onto my wrist.
The thin silver chain caught the light with a faint sparkle.
“It still looks pretty good.”
Sadie sniffled loudly. “You are never allowed to take it off again, Nicole!”
“Okay. I won’t.”
[Oh my god, the backstory of the bracelet is hitting me right in the feelings.]
[Sadie saved her allowance for three whole months just to buy a gift for Nicole.]
