Chapter 1

A Boy Called My Husband Dad, Then His Secret Family Unraveled Chapter 01

That night, after the company’s celebration, a new message suddenly popped up in the family group chat.

An unfamiliar cartoon profile picture tagged my husband.

[Dad, send me some money. I want to buy a game console.]

I froze.

I checked the group again, just to make sure I had not somehow opened the wrong chat.

No. It was Ethan Bennett’s immediate family group.

The group where I had been a member for years.

Ethan and I had been married for years. We had one child, our daughter, Mia Bennett.

So when had my husband suddenly acquired another kid?

The message disappeared almost immediately.

Deleted.

But there was no way I could pretend I had never seen it.

Before I could do anything, Ethan called me himself.

“Hey,” he said with a laugh. “You won’t believe this. One of my distant relatives’ kids apparently mistook me for his dad.”

I forced myself to laugh along.

“Kids make mistakes. Maybe he just tapped the wrong name.”

I even tried to sound understanding.

But the moment the celebration ended, I headed straight for the parking garage.

As I walked, I called a private investigator and gave him one simple instruction.

Find out who owned that account.

…

Neon lights flashed across the car window as I drove through the city.

But I barely noticed them.

My mind kept circling back to that one message.

I had always been suspicious by nature. I trusted my instincts, and when something felt wrong, I never believed in looking the other way.

It was better to investigate and be wrong than to ignore something that could destroy my life.

Then I saw Ethan’s latest social media post.

[Daddy-daughter time. Helping my girl with her homework.]

There was a photo attached.

The living room was brightly lit. Mia sat on the couch with a blank expression, staring straight into the camera.

Something made me zoom in.

I stared at the photo for several seconds.

Then my breath caught.

There was a reflection in Mia’s pupils.

Two figures.

A woman and a little boy.

I had never seen either of them before.

Two hours later, I pulled up outside Ethan’s parents’ house.

It was the weekend.

Normally, Ethan brought Mia here to visit his parents.

The front door opened.

A woman I had never seen before stood on the other side.

The smile on her face froze the moment she saw me.

That reaction told me everything I needed to know.

She immediately started stammering.

“I… I’m Renee Miller. I just came to visit Mr. and Mrs. Bennett.”

I said nothing.

I simply pushed past her and walked inside.

From the living room came Ethan’s voice.

“Renee? Who is it?”

Renee didn’t answer.

After several seconds of silence, Ethan came toward the entryway.

The moment he saw me, he stopped dead.

I must have looked like hell after rushing across town, but I didn’t care.

The air seemed to freeze.

The silence was so suffocating I could barely breathe.

I pushed past Ethan and walked into the living room.

His parents had been gathered around a little boy.

The instant they saw me, they both shot to their feet.

Brenda Bennett, my mother-in-law, slammed her knee against the coffee table.

The loud bang echoed through the room.

Yet she still forced a smile onto her face.

“You’re here? Ethan said you had work tonight.”

“Oh. I finished early.”

My answer was deliberately casual.

Then my eyes landed on Mia.

She was sitting alone in the corner of the couch.

The second she saw me, her eyes turned red.

She jumped up and ran straight into my arms.

“Mom, you finally came.”

I wrapped my arms around her, my heart aching.

Mia had always been a tough kid.

She rarely let her emotions show like this.

Whatever had happened while I was gone, she had clearly been hurt.

Renee stood naturally beside Ethan, staring at me with a wounded, almost pitiful expression.

Ethan gently patted her shoulder as if comforting her.

Then he looked at me.

“Have you eaten? I can heat something up for you.”

“No.”

Food was the last thing on my mind.

Brenda’s eyes darted around the room.

She tugged on her husband Richard Bennett’s sleeve.

Richard cleared his throat and put on the stern expression he always used when he wanted to lecture me.

“Look at you. You come through the door with that expression, like the whole family has somehow wronged you.”

I suddenly smiled.

My eyes moved to Renee.

She was watching me too, twisting the hem of her sweater nervously between her fingers.

She wore light makeup, a simple long dress, and a soft cardigan.

Everything about her was carefully put together to make her look sweet, innocent, and like the perfect wife.

It was completely different from my own style.

Ethan quietly stepped between us, blocking my view of her.

He reached for my purse.

“Go wash your face. I’ll warm up some milk for you.”

I didn’t move.

I simply looked down at Mia.

She had both arms wrapped tightly around my waist.

She refused to let go.

Her eyes were red and swollen as she whispered,

“Mom, I want to go home.”

“What happened?” I stroked her hair gently. “Did someone hurt you?”

“I… I don’t like Leo.”

Mia’s voice was muffled against me.

The little boy who had been playing with a game console suddenly looked up.

His eyes met mine.

A chill ran straight down my spine.

He looked so much like Ethan.

The shape of his eyes.

The line of his brows.

Even the expression on his face.

It was unmistakable.

I kept my voice perfectly calm, as though I knew nothing.

“Who’s this little guy?”

The boy looked to be around seven or eight.

He stared at me with narrowed eyes.

Then, without hesitation, he shouted,

“Dad! Who is this woman? Why is she in our house?”
