But the next second, his jaw tightened defensively.
No. He had done nothing wrong.
A defensive voice rose unbidden in his mind.
If Felicity really had been that person, why had she never told him? She was cunning, ready to trade her pride for cash.
He still remembered her saying bluntly years ago: Yes, I chased Harris purely for his wealth.
Only yesterday, when he’d paid off her loan and told her to leave, she’d agreed without a second thought.
At her core, Felicity was nothing but greedy, obsessed with money.
Yet another voice tore through his mind, clashing against that conviction.
If money was all she wanted, why tend to him in silence for two years and never utter a word about it?
Why stay quiet when he was about to marry Nicole?
Not only had she hidden the truth—she’d even taught Nicole how to care for him.
At this thought, Harris’s breathing grew erratic.
Each breath scraped against something sharp in his chest, a slow, stabbing ache that refused to fade.
He grabbed his phone and dialed Felicity’s number in near desperation.
“We’re sorry. The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
The sterile automated voice filled the room.
Harris’s heart constricted violently. The memory flashed before him: handing her the loan document.
Her face had shown no hunger for money, no calculated push-and-pull.
Her gaze had been hollow, nothing but a frightening, lifeless stillness.
An overwhelming panic seized Harris.
He called his assistant at once. “Track Felicity Carlisle’s old address. Find her current whereabouts. Now.”
Harris didn’t sleep a wink all night.
At dawn the next day, the moment his assistant sent over the address, he drove straight to the old urban village.
He pushed open the unlocked, worn wooden door, only to find a bare bedframe inside.
The place was emptied, abandoned.
Harris stood frozen in the vacant rental apartment. After a moment, a bitter smile twisted his lips.
Felicity had boarded the train back to her hometown long ago. He’d been foolish to race here searching for her.
He took a long breath and turned to leave.
Just then, hurried footsteps approached from the hallway.
