He Begged Me to Let Him Go, Now He’s Begging to Come Back Chapter 08
Word got around the next morning: Greg had frozen Linda’s credit cards overnight and served her divorce papers, demanding she walk away with nothing.
At noon, the emergency room exploded into chaos.
Linda ran through the triage area with a kitchen knife in her hand, her hair flying behind her. “Emily! Get out
here, you bitch!”
She swung the knife wildly, sending patients and nurses scattering.
“You ruined everything! You came back here to seduce my husband! He froze my cards because of you! He’s kicking me out! Are you happy now? Are you trying to destroy both of us?”
I had just walked out of the trauma bay when I came face to face with her.
Her eyes locked onto me and turned red. She lunged with the knife. “I’ll kill you!”
I didn’t move.
When the blade was inches from my shoulder, I stepped sideways and caught her wrist.
Years of holding forceps and clamps had given me better grip strength than a hysterical woman could
match.
I twisted. The knife clattered to the floor. Then I kicked the back of her knee.
Linda screamed and dropped to the ground. Security was on her in seconds.
The police came fast. They took Linda away. I followed to the Millbrook Police Department to give my
statement.
Thirty minutes later, Greg ran through the station doors, sweating and out of breath.
He saw me sitting on a bench, completely fine, and let out a long breath.
Then he walked over to me and said the most entitled thing I had ever heard.
“Emily. You’re not hurt. Nothing happened to you. Linda just lost her temper. She didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“Henry is still in the hospital. He needs his mother. Can you sign a letter of leniency and let her go?”
I looked at him and saw a monster.
His wife had come at me with a knife in a hospital, and instead of apologizing, he was asking me to be the
bigger person.
“Greg.” I pulled out my phone and played a recording.
It was from the night he forced me to sign the divorce papers. I had hidden my phone in my pocket and recorded everything.
Greg’s voice came through the speaker, unhinged and desperate. “Emily, just let me go! I’m begging you!”
Then the sound of a razor blade slicing into skin. Then my own voice, sobbing, pleading.
And behind it all, Linda’s soft, poisonous whisper. “Greg, please stop. You know Emily can’t stand to see you
hurt…”
I had changed phones three times in five years. I had kept this recording for this exact moment.
The police station went silent. The officers at the nearby desks stared at Greg with open disgust.
Greg’s face went white. Sweat ran down his forehead.
“You cut your wrist to make me leave with nothing.” I put my phone away, my voice calm, like I was talking
about someone else’s life.
“And now your wife comes at me with a knife, and you want me to sign a letter of leniency.” I looked at him.
“Your whole family makes me sick.”
I stood up and walked to the officer at the front desk. “Officer. I refuse to mediate.”
Greg grabbed my arm. Hard. “Emily! Do you have to destroy us completely?”
The officer stood up and pulled Greg off me. “Sir, do you know anything about the law?”
“Assaulting a medical professional with a weapon in a hospital is attempted murder. That’s a criminal prosecution by the state. No victim letter of leniency is going to make this go away.”
I pulled my arm free and smoothed my sleeve. “You got what you deserved.”
