He Begged Me to Let Him Go, Now He’s Begging to Come Back Chapter 10

Two years later.

I was invited to speak at an international medical conference overseas.

As the only young scholar invited from the United States, I gave a forty-minute presentation on the main

stage.

The applause filled the hall.

Sam sat in the front row, taking pictures.

Afterward, he handed me a glass of water. “Dr. Carter. Perfect as always.”

I took a sip. “Thank you, Dr. Reed.”

After the conference ended, we walked along the shore of Lake Geneva. The sunlight was warm, and the

water sparkled.

Sam stopped walking. He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket.

“Emily.” He looked at me, his eyes clear and steady. No calculations. No strings. Just love. “When this project

is over, let’s get married.”

I looked at him and smiled. “Okay.”

The day we flew back, our flight was delayed.

I sat in the departure lounge, scrolling through the news on my phone.

A local story caught my eye.

[Former Business Owner Now Delivery Driver Critically Injured in Late Night Hit and Run.]

The photo showed a crushed bicycle and takeout containers scattered across the pavement.

The victim’s face was blurred.

But I recognized the scar on his wrist. The one he had made with a razor blade to manipulate me.

The article said the man had been delivering for DoorDash late at night to pay for his son’s medical bills.

The driver who hit him had fled. The victim was in the ICU. No one knew if he would make it.

I read the article to the end. Then I closed it.

The airport loudspeaker announced our boarding call.

Sam picked up my suitcase and took my hand. “Come on. Let’s go home.”

I stood up and put my phone in my pocket. “Okay. Let’s go home.”

Outside the window, a plane lifted off the runway and climbed into the sky.

Some people spend their whole lives running in place, repeating the same tragic patterns.

I learned a long time ago to follow the light.
