He Gave Everyone a Key but Me Chapter 05
I stared at the message, my finger hovering over the screen.
Before I could reply, Tinsley suddenly rose from her seat.
“Mr. Harrison, I’d like to make a toast.”
Holding her wine glass, she walked around Logan and headed toward Lance.
As she turned, her high heel seemed to catch awkwardly.
“Ah!”
She cried out as her body lurched toward me.
The red wine glass tilted in her hand and spilled directly onto my black dress.
“I’m so sorry! I’m sorry!”
Tinsley straightened herself in a panic and grabbed a stack of napkins.
But instead of handing them to me, she looked right past me at Logan.
“Mr. Mercer, I didn’t mean to. I twisted my ankle for a second…”
Her eyes reddened instantly.
Logan was on his feet at once.
He didn’t even glance at the wine soaking into my dress.
Instead, he grabbed Tinsley’s wrist immediately.
“Are you okay? Does your foot hurt?”
His voice was tight with concern as he carefully checked her ankle.
I remained seated, watching the scene unfold.
The wine dripped steadily down my dress.
Across the table, Lance cleared his throat twice, his expression slightly darkening.
Only then did Logan seem to realize what had happened.
He released Tinsley’s hand and turned toward me.
“Claire, are you alright?”
He picked up a warm towel from the table and handed it over.
“Go clean up in the restroom. That’s an expensive fabric—you don’t want the stain setting.”
“Okay.”
I stood and took the towel.
Without looking at Tinsley, I walked straight out of the private room.
Inside the restroom, I stood at the sink and rinsed the wine stain with cold water.
The red wine had already seeped into the fibers. It wasn’t coming out.
I looked at my reflection. My face was pale. My eyes, however, had never been clearer.
Footsteps sounded behind me.
The door opened and Logan walked in.
He closed the door behind him and came over.
“Still mad?”
His arms wrapped around my waist from behind, his chin settling on my shoulder.
“Tinsley can be clumsy. I’ve already talked to her.”
Looking at me through the mirror, his eyes were impossibly gentle.
“If the dress is ruined, it’s ruined. I’ll take you shopping this afternoon and buy you another one.”
“When work slows down next month, I’ll take you to Encepool for a vacation, okay?”
He was always like this.
One slap, and one piece of candy.
He was certain I couldn’t leave him, and that as long as he softened his attitude a little, I’d forgive him like I always had.
I turned off the faucet, then I faced him.
“Logan.”
“Yes?”
One eyebrow lifted slightly as he waited for whatever I was about to say.
I pulled my phone from my purse.
The screen was still lit.
The message remained on the lock screen.
Kevin: [The wedding dress arrived by air shipment. Want to go try it on together tomorrow afternoon?]
Logan’s eyes drifted casually across the screen.
Then they stopped on the words “Kevin” and “wedding dress.”
The indifference on his face shattered instantly.
His voice carried unmistakable disbelief.
“You’re… going to try on wedding dresses with another man?”
Then, as if something occurred to him, he let out a short laugh.
There was a trace of amusement in it.
“Claire.”
“What is this? A stunt to force me into giving you a key to the new place?”
He thought I was putting on a show, and that I was using some childish trick to pressure him into giving in.
“Kevin?” He rolled the name over slowly.
“Kevin Todd? Wasn’t he one of your college classmates? I thought he moved overseas.”
