He Never Ran Out of Words—Just for Me Chapter 04

Over the next few days, I was completely buried in handing over my projects.

I didn’t care less about where Garrett was spending his time.

My best friend sent me a text: [Has your husband been body-snatched?]

The attached screenshot showed Garrett’s Instagram.

A guy who hadn’t posted a single thing in seven years had spent the last three days practically running a live-stream on his IG Stories.

Famous spots, trendy restaurants, aesthetic photos—everything he used to despise.

When we got married, he hadn’t posted a single photo of us.

And he had gone through the trouble of hiding his IG Posts from me.

Occasionally, he’d send a half-hearted text explaining why he wasn’t coming home.

I never replied.

He didn’t seem to care either.

The night before my flight, Janice took me out for a farewell dinner.

Right as we reached the entrance of the Cajun Crawfish Boil joint, two familiar voices drifted out along with the spicy aroma.

Vivian asked in a condescending tone, “Gary, you graduated from a top-tier university. How did you end up marrying someone who couldn’t even get into a decent community college?”

Garrett remained silent for a few seconds before giving a careless shrug. “Things were different back then. She was… a safe, low-maintenance option to settle down with.”

A low-maintenance option.

So I was nothing more than a compromise.

He had never even asked why I didn’t take my SATs, nor did he know I had turned down an Ivy League Fellowship.

I had moved to France solely to chase my dream of fashion design.

In his eyes, I was just a drop-out who went abroad to get a useless degree—a cheap option he calculated for domestic comfort.

Vivian pressed further, her voice testing the waters. “Gary, she’s completely beneath you. Look at me, I’m divorced now. Should we start over?”

Before I could hear Garrett’s answer, Janice, who had just caught up, grabbed my arm and pulled me back to reality.

I didn’t know what he finally said.

He probably nodded.

After all, she was the goddess he had chased for three long years in college.

Following Janice into the restaurant, my eyes instantly locked onto Garrett. He was carefully peeling crawfish for Vivian.

Since Vivian was a Deep South native, he was more than willing to cater to her tastes.

Whenever I wanted to get crawfish, he’d always frown and complain about how greasy and messy it was.

Janice pointed in their direction, lowering her voice. “Isn’t that Garrett? Who is he having dinner with?”

I simply shook my head.

Seeing my expression and knowing I was leaving for The Metro Fashion District, she understood instantly.

“That piece of trash! You’ve been so good to him, and he does this? I’m going over there to tear him a new one!”

I pulled her back tightly. “Don’t. It’s not worth it.”

The moment the words left my mouth, Vivian spotted us.

She waved enthusiastically. “Hannah! What a coincidence! Come join us!”

Her current warmth was a total contrast to the venomous tone she had used moments ago.

There was no way Garrett hadn’t heard her.

But he merely paused for a fraction of a second, then went right back to staring at his plate.

Playing blind.

I forced a polite, empty smile. “No, thank you. I’m here with a friend.”

Janice shot a lethal glare at Vivian, dragging me to the furthest corner of the room while muttering, “The nerve! Are homewreckers always this shameless nowadays?”

Right in the middle of our dinner, a loud crash shattered the noise from a neighboring table.

A group of drunk men had gotten into a massive fight, throwing bottles.

The restaurant instantly erupted into absolute chaos.

We were seated in the deepest corner, and the stampeding crowd completely blocked the exit.

In the frenzy, broken glass sprayed everywhere. Panic seized me, and I instinctively screamed toward Garrett’s direction.

“Garrett, help me!”

He snapped his head up and looked at me, instantly taking a step forward to rush over.

But Vivian suddenly grabbed his arm tight.

“Garrett, it’s too dangerous, I’m terrified!” she whimpered. “We need to get out of here right now!”

His footsteps stopped dead. He hesitated for a single second, then wrapped his arms tightly around Vivian, shielding her as he bolted out the door without looking back.

With the help of the staff, Janice and I finally managed to squeeze out of the chaotic crowd.

Fortunately, we were unhurt, though our clothes were ruined with stains.

Watching the empty street where they had disappeared, the very last thread of affection in my heart snapped.

The next day, I dragged my suitcase to the airport and boarded the flight to The Metro Fashion District, never looking back.
