My face went even paler.

I lost the baby because my body was too weak. And his father had never even believed it was real.

When I happily handed Jason the pregnancy test result, his eyes were full of scorn.

And the day I miscarried, I called him and texted him, over and over, crying.

In return, I got a dozen payment alerts and a message from Sophia saying, “Sorry, Emily, Jason’s busy making me some warm milk.”

That was the day I truly broke down. I trashed the whole apartment, ripped up our marriage certificate, screaming and crying at Jason.

“Why won’t you answer my messages? Why do you just keep sending me money? What does it even mean!”

He just smiled and said, “Isn’t this what you wanted? What, you want more?”

I tore at my hair in agony until my scalp ached and my face was soaked with tears.

“If you hate me so much, why did you stay me pregnant? Why won’t you just divorce me?”

But he just kept smiling. He said, “Oh, Emily, you’re really getting lost in your own act. Don’t lie to yourself.”

After that day, I stopped talking much.

“Mother, don’t rush her,” Aunt Patricia said, glancing at Sophia with a smirk. “Better to count on Sophia. Look at her. She’s built to have babies.”

Sophia’s face turned red and she looked down.

Jason suddenly frowned. “Stop that. I’ve always thought of Sophia as a sister.”

“Oh, I know, I know. A sister you have a crush on, same thing.” Aunt Patricia covered her mouth and laughed. “I still have those love letters you wrote her when you were kids.”

“That was when I was young and didn’t know any better—”

My stomach churned. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I stood up quickly, knocking over a bone china plate. It shattered on the floor.

For a second, everyone looked at me with disgust.

“I’m sorry.” My voice shook. I stumbled toward the door.

“Emily!” Jason caught me in the hallway. His face was dark. “You can’t even walk right now? What kind of weak act is this supposed to be?”

“If you’re really sick, go to the hospital. Stop faking!”

I opened my mouth, but no words came.

I wanted to tell him. Tell him that in a few days, he would be free.

But just as I started to speak, a louder noise came from inside the house, drowning out my weak voice.

“Jason!” Sophia called out, her voice trembling with tears. “I cut my hand on the broken plate. It hurts so much.”

Jason’s face changed. He turned immediately and went back inside. “Don’t touch anything, you hear me!” The worry in his voice was obvious.

I stood in the hallway, the cold wind cutting through my thin clothes.

In that torn-up place where my heart used to be, there was no expected pain this time.

Just a hollow numbness remained.
