I Canceled Our Wedding the Day Before, He Was at His Ex’s Somewhere in the Alps Chapter 05

After lunch, I got up to leave. Caleb followed me out to the car.

In the elevator, he suddenly spoke. “My mom didn’t mean it.”

“Mean what?”

He paused. “Asking Jessica to call her Mom. She didn’t mean it.”

I smiled and raised my hands, looking at them. “The first time your mom met me, she told me I was beautiful. She said my hands looked soft, like I’d never worked a day in my life.”

“Then every time I went to your house, the second I sat down, she asked me to help in the kitchen. Seven years. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve washed dishes at your house.”

I looked at him. “And Jessica? At lunch just now, your mom wouldn’t even let her pour her own water.”

Caleb’s expression shifted. “Emma, Jessica is a guest.”

“Your mom had a guest call her Mom?”

Caleb was silent.

I asked him another question. “Whose idea was it to bring me the wedding chocolates?”

Caleb froze.

“Jessica’s idea. She said you should have some of the good luck.”

“And you didn’t stop her?”

“I didn’t think that much about it…”

I laughed again.

After seven years together, I had heard that sentence from Caleb’s mouth more times than I could count.

He forgot my birthday. “Work was crazy. I didn’t think about it.”

On our anniversary, he gave me the same bracelet he gave Jessica. “Same brand. I didn’t think about it.”

Even when he proposed and the ring was a size too big, his explanation was, “I don’t pay attention to little things like that. I didn’t think about it.”

Maybe he really didn’t think. I didn’t know anymore. And honestly, I no longer cared.

I only asked him one question. “Caleb, if you want to back out of marrying me, it’s not too late.”

Caleb’s face changed instantly. He got serious. His left hand grabbed my wrist hard.

“Emma, don’t say stupid things like that. We’ve been together seven years. Who else would you marry, if not me?”

He took a breath. “If you don’t want the chocolates, I’ll throw them away. But I don’t like what you just said. Take it back.”

Watching him get angry like that, so rare for him, I just smiled faintly.

“Okay.”

I walked out of the elevator and left him behind.

That night, I shipped the last of my things out of the apartment and sent Sophie a photo to show her.

Caleb texted me: [Still mad? I already talked to my mom. She won’t ask you to do dishes anymore.]

I didn’t reply.

He texted again: [Twelve hours until our wedding, Emma. Are you excited?]

I sat in the empty living room, no trace of celebration anywhere. I hesitated, then still didn’t reply.

Sophie forwarded me a news article.

[These two are garbage! Look at this right now!]

I clicked it. It was a local Cancun news story.

Title: [Cancun Wedding of the Year – Groom Says: True Love Is Priceless]

The journalist wrote two thousand words describing Caleb and Jessica’s wedding ceremony. There was also a photo of Caleb being interviewed.

The reporter asked him, “Why did you choose to get married in Cancun?”

He answered, “Because my wife likes it.”

I downloaded and saved the article.

Then I opened Caleb’s chat box and replied: [So excited.]

After sending that message, I took off my engagement ring and set it on the coffee table.

Next to it, I placed his computer. I moved the mouse and pasted the link Sophie had sent me. I left the screen on the news article about Caleb and Jessica’s wedding.

I took one last look at the room. Then I turned off the lights and left.

Sophie was already waiting for me in her car downstairs.

“Where to?”

“The airport.”

As the car pulled out of the neighborhood, I didn’t look back.

I set my phone to silent.

Goodbye to seven years of my life.

The next morning at 8:00 a.m., Caleb showed up at the apartment with Jessica and his relatives.

The moment the door opened, everyone’s jaw dropped.
