I Caught My Childhood Sweetheart Cheating—I Only Wanted His Money Anyway Chapter 07
I snatched the glass from her hand and rushed it to the kitchen.
I dipped in a test strip, and it turned black.
The wine was poisoned.
“Ethan–you!” Evelyn stared at him in disbelief, her whole body shaking.
Knowing he’d been exposed, Ethan dropped to his knees at once.
“Mom, I was wrong. Chloe told me to do it! We couldn’t even afford food these past few days. She said she
never expected you to be so heartless to me.”
“She said I’m your only son, and everything you own will be mine sooner or later. If you got sick, you’d
definitely bring me back right away…”
Evelyn looked at the blackened strip.
That color meant it was lethal.
Her whole body trembled with fury. “You weren’t trying to make me sick. You were trying to kill me so you
could inherit everything. You’ve broken my heart.”
‘No, Mom. That’s not what I meant. I was wrong. Mom, I was wrong!” He stayed there on his knees, crying.
But at that point, nothing he said mattered anymore.
Evelyn was done with him for good. “Get out. From this moment on, I have no son.”
Then Ethan turned to me. ‘Claire, help me.”
I kicked him away. “Get out. Didn’t you hear what your mom said?”
The butler arrived at once.
He took one look at the scene, said nothing, and had Ethan thrown out.
Afterward, I quietly told the butler to follow him.
As expected, Chloe was waiting just beyond the gates of the Sterling estate, near the wooded edge of the
property.
She had clearly been waiting for him all along.
The moment she saw Ethan come out with his head hanging low, she knew something had gone wrong.
Ethan looked at her angrily. “Chloe, was that really poison you gave me?”
‘Of course not. It was just a sedative. Why would I possibly give you actual poison?”
He stomped his foot in frustration. ‘I knew it. Claire Bennett must have ruined it again.”
Chloe glanced at a news alert on her phone and said, ‘Baby, the engagement between the Bennett and Sterling families has already made major headlines.”
“If you don’t show up that day, and all those media outlets are there, won’t Claire be publicly humiliated?”
Ethan fell silent, then slowly clenched his fists. ‘Claire Bennett, you brought this on yourself.”
A month later, the Bennett–Sterling engagement ceremony was officially held at the Grand Harbor Convention
Center.
The two families were among the biggest corporate empires in Harbor City, so news of their alliance had triggered enormous attention.
The Sterling heir was said to have built his own company and rarely appeared publicly under the Sterling
family name.
As for the Bennett family’s daughter, she had been studying abroad and this would be her first public
appearance as an adult.
Naturally, everyone wanted to see what the two of us looked like.
Media vans lined the entrance to the convention center.
Ethan and Chloe sat in a private room across the street, watching everything unfold.
“When the time comes, I won’t show. Let’s see how the Bennett family cleans up that mess.”
He held his phone tightly, clearly waiting for either Evelyn or me to call.
To him, this engagement couldn’t happen without him.
He still believed he could use this as his final negotiation.
The entire event was being streamed live online.
At the chosen hour, the doors of the venue slowly opened.
Under the bright lights, a beautifully dressed couple emerged.
The Bennett heiress stood poised and elegant, her arm linked through that of a tall, sharp–looking man in a perfectly tailored suit.
Smiling, the two of them walked to center stage and signed the formal engagement papers together.
Then Evelyn took the microphone and publicly announced that he would be the future heir to the Sterling
family empire.
