I Caught My Childhood Sweetheart Cheating—I Only Wanted His Money Anyway Chapter 09
Ethan stood there as if his soul had left his body, staring at the disgust written all over Chloe’s face as
though he were seeing her clearly for the first time.
“What… what did you say?” His voice came out dry and strained.
Chloe let out a cold laugh, folded her arms across her chest, and looked at him with none of the softness
she used to pretend to have.
‘I said you’re useless. Was that not clear enough? Take a good look at yourself, Ethan. Your company is gone, your inheritance is gone, and even your own mother wants nothing to do with you. What exactly do you
have left?”
He staggered back a step, like he’d taken a punch straight to the chest.
‘Chloe, you told me before… you said you’d stay with me no matter whether I had money or not. You said even if I got engaged to Claire, you still wouldn’t leave me…” he muttered, as if trying to convince himself it
had all been real.
She rolled her eyes, openly impatient. “Ethan, how old are you? And you still believed that?”
‘The only reason I was ever with you was for the Sterling family’s money and status. Now that you have
neither, why would I stay?”
Then she lowered her gaze to her slightly rounded stomach, and her voice turned even crueler.
‘To tell you the truth, this baby was always supposed to be my way into the Sterling family. But now look at
you. You can’t even support yourself. And you expect me to have your child?”
His eyes flew wide, his pupils shaking violently. “W–what are you saying? The baby isn’t mine?”
Chloe snorted as if the question itself were ridiculous. “What do you think? With a brain like yours, you really thought I’d want you for you?”
‘If you hadn’t been the Sterling family’s only heir, do you really think I would have bothered?”
“You were just the sucker I dumped my mess on. The real father of this child has already been waiting for me
overseas.”
That line hit Ethan like a knife through the heart.
He thought of everything he had done for her.
He had thrown away the alliance, defied his mother, and nearly killed the woman who raised him.
He had thought he was protecting love.
He had thought Chloe was sincere.
But in the end, all of it had been nothing but a carefully staged lie.
“You… you bitch!” his eyes turned bloodshot as he roared hoarsely, “You lied to me. You lied to me from beginning to end.”
Chloe didn’t flinch in the slightest. “So what if I did? You were stupid enough to fall for it.”
“Ethan, here’s a piece of advice. Learn to read the room and stop bothering me. From this point on, you and I
have nothing to do with each other.”
Then she turned to leave.
He lunged forward and grabbed her wrist. “You’re not going anywhere. Explain it. Whose child is it? Why did
you ruin my life?”
She ripped her hand free with disgust. “Let go of me. Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough already?”
‘Take a good look at your life. You don’t even have a place to stay. What are you going to raise a child with?
And even if the baby were yours, I still wouldn’t keep it.”
‘You…‘
At that moment, whatever reason Ethan had left finally snapped.
He thought of the chance I had offered him.
He thought of the disappointment in his mother’s eyes.
He thought of every step that had dragged him deeper into ruin.
And the person standing at the center of it all was the woman right in front of him.
“It was all you! You did this to me!”
His voice was crazed. “If not for you, I never would have fallen out with Claire. If not for you, I never would
have poisoned my mother. If not for you, I would never have ended up like this.”
He threw himself at her and clamped both hands around her throat.
Chloe struggled in terror, her face turning from white to purple, broken pleas slipping from her lips.
“L–let go… please… let go…”
But Ethan couldn’t hear a thing anymore.
Only one thought remained in his head.
She had destroyed everything.
She had to pay for it.
By the time he came back to himself, Chloe was already lying motionless on the ground.
Blood spread slowly beneath her, staining the pavement red.
Ethan collapsed where he stood, shaking all over as he stared at his own hands, now covered in blood.
Then he began to laugh.
It was the sound of a man who had gone completely mad.
His broken, desperate laughter echoed through the empty parking garage.
When I heard the news, I was in first class again, this time on a plane headed overseas for my honeymoon.
A flight attendant handed me a glass of champagne with a warm smile and congratulated me on my
wedding.
I accepted it without much reaction.
I wasn’t surprised at all that Ethan had ended up where he did.
From the moment he chose Chloe over his mother, from the moment he tried to poison Evelyn, he had
already crossed a line he could never come back from.
Chloe’s death was his crime.
And it was also the ending he had written for himself.
I lifted the glass and took a small sip of champagne, then looked out the window.
Clouds rolled like a white sea beneath the plane, while sunlight struck the wing and scattered into brilliant
shards of gold.
In the end, the world still had a way of being kind to decent people.
Evelyn had been heartbroken, yes, but she had protected the Sterling family empire and held fast to her
moral line.
And I had finally found the man truly worth entrusting my life to.
The plane cut smoothly through the clouds.
I turned back and looked at the man beside me, sharp in his tailored suit, warm in his smile.
He took my hand and asked softly, “What are you thinking about?”
I smiled and shook my head. ‘Nothing. I was just thinking… this feels nice.”
He tightened his fingers around mine and asked no more.
In the cabin, the flight attendants‘ gentle voices rose again with soft congratulations.
“Wishing Mr. and Mrs. Sterling a lifetime of happiness.”
I closed my eyes, a small smile still on my lips.
Everything that belonged to the past could stay buried there.
From this point on, my life would only get better.
