I Put a Price on My Don Husband Chapter 11
Vincent grabbed his car keys and raced out the door without delay. He slammed his foot on the gas and headed for their old home.
His heart raced the entire drive. Anger tangled with faint hope as he planned how he would hold her close and apologize, make excuses for the things he’d had to do, and beg for a fresh start and another child.
He told himself the marital dissolution agreement was nothing more than a silly prank.
The car pulled up outside the old house. Vincent glanced up to see the entire building shrouded in complete darkness.
His heart sank sharply.
She always left a warm yellow light burning for him here once. That glow had chased away all his exhaustion.
Tonight, the house was deathly silent, devoid of any sign of life.
“She must have gone to bed early.”
Vincent pushed down his rising unease, pulled out his keys, and turned the doorknob gently.
A stale, dusty stench hit him the second the door swung open, cold and unfamiliar.
There was no light, no warmth, no trace of her soft scent.
Vincent’s mood plummeted further.
He flipped the light switch. The bright glow revealed an empty living room.
The sofa sat vacant. The bedroom bed was neatly made, untouched for days. The kitchen was cold and lifeless, with no trace of cooking ever taking place.
No one had lived here for a very long time.
“Claire! Claire!”
Vincent sprinted frantically through every room. He checked the closets, balcony, bathroom and storage room, searching every corner in vain.
Panic clamped down on his throat and robbed him of his breath.
His hands shook as he dialed her number.
A cold automated voice echoed from the speaker.
“We’re sorry, the number you have dialed has blocked your calls. Please try again later.”
She’d blocked him.
Every drop of color fled Vincent’s face. His body went ice cold, his limbs trembling uncontrollably.
He could not believe the woman who had once loved him with every part of her being had truly left him for good.
“No… this can’t be happening.” Vincent mumbled to himself. He bolted out of the house, slammed on the gas, and sped back to the estate as fast as he could.
Natalie heard the commotion and hurried over to him, reaching out to wrap her arms around his body.
“Vincent, you’re home. I’ve waited so long for you.”
“Get away from me!”
Vincent’s eyes blazed red with fury. He shoved her away hard, like an enraged beast.
Natalie stumbled and fell to the floor, staring up at him in utter shock.
Vincent paid her no mind whatsoever. He tore through the entire estate, shouting Claire’s name in a hoarse, despairing tone.
He searched upstairs, downstairs, the garden and the garage, but her familiar figure was nowhere to be found.
She was gone.
Vanished without a trace.
Vincent teetered on the brink of a total breakdown.
Natalie climbed back to her feet and crept closer. She spotted the marital dissolution agreement on the table, and a flash of wild joy crossed her face before she put on a worried expression and tried to soothe him.
“Don’t be upset, Vincent. Claire’s just throwing a little tantrum. All girls need a little kindness. Apologize to her, and she’ll come right back.”
She tugged gently at his arm, her voice soft.
“It’s late and freezing outside. Leo needs his father too. Stay here tonight, and look for Claire tomorrow. She’s surely gone to the Reed family home. She won’t go far.”
Vincent’s mind was in chaos. Her words managed to calm him down slightly.
She had to be staying with the Reeds. He would go there first thing in the morning to apologize and beg for her forgiveness.
