My Boyfriend’s Weekend Escape Was With My Best Friend Chapter 01
My boyfriend spent every weekend on a 48-hour escape.
I asked if I could go with him, but he always said no.
“We see each other every day. You still want to hang around me all weekend? Doesn’t that get old?”
“We’re adults. Isn’t it good to give each other some space?”
I was afraid of annoying him, so I stopped bringing it up.
Then came the news. A flash flood hit his destination this time. His name was on the rescue list.
But when my eyes moved down, I saw my best friend’s name at the bottom.
I couldn’t believe it. I called them both, but no one picked up.
So I called my best friend’s boyfriend.
“She goes on that 48-hour escape every week,” he said. “She told me she goes with you. You didn’t know?”
In that moment, my heart sank.
She wasn’t going with me. She was going with my boyfriend.
The two of them were trying to escape from me.
The rescue report was still playing on TV. But my hand trembled as I held the phone. My whole body felt cold, like I was frozen solid.
Jason Miller had been doing this for an entire year.
At first, I begged him to take me along.
We were both busy with work, leaving early and coming home late. Sometimes we barely saw each other during the week. But every time I brought it up, he got annoyed.
“Do you have to be attached at the hip all the time? Don’t you have your own things to do? You wear me out.”
I shut up and went to complain to my best friend.
Chloe told me, “Distance creates beauty. You need to give him more personal space.”
I listened to her. I never brought it up again. I just stayed home on weekends, cooking, waiting for him to come back.
But I never imagined that both of them were in this together.
I sat in the apartment all night, torn between worry and rage. But mostly, I didn’t know what to feel if my guess was true.
Then at six in the morning, the hospital called.
Jason had been brought in for emergency treatment. He was out of danger.
But Chloe was listed in critical condition.
When I got to the hospital, Jason was lying in bed. His arms and legs were bandaged, and his body was covered in scrapes.
When he saw me come in, he tried to say something, but with the oxygen mask on, all I could hear was fogged breath.
A nurse told me they’d been brought in together. Their hands were clasped so tight when they arrived that the staff had a hard time prying them apart.
Jason motioned urgently for me to take off his mask.
I thought he was going to explain.
But as soon as the mask came off, his voice came out hoarse and dry. “How is Chloe?”
I just stared at him. There wasn’t a trace of remorse on his face. Just anxiety.
When I didn’t answer, he yanked out his IV needle and tried to get out of bed.
Last time, I got into a multi-car pileup on my way home. I almost died.
When I woke up in the hospital, it was three days later. The nurse said they couldn’t reach the emergency contact in my phone.
I stayed in the hospital for three days. Jason never called once.
I ended up calling Chloe. She showed up with Jason.
Back then, I thought she couldn’t stand the fact that he’d left me alone at the hospital, so she dragged him along.
Now I realize they were already together.
A nurse rushed in and grabbed Jason before he could get up.
“What are you doing? You’re in a cast. You can’t move like that.”
“Your girlfriend is still in the ICU. You two really are joined at the hip.”
