Ten Years of Regret Chapter 05

Back at work, I found out what he meant.

The projects I’d been handling had all been transferred to Ivy Dawson.

She was our new team lead, always smiling as she gave me every little grunt job.

Chase showed up every day at noon to take her to lunch.

When he looked at me, his eyes were ice cold.

The online scandal about Montgomery Group kept getting worse.

He wanted me to come with him to the Montgomerys’ press conference on Monday.

Explain that Ivy wasn’t any kind of other woman.

Say that I’d broken them up back when she was abroad, that I’d used a pregnancy to force him into marriage.

He made it sound so nice. Said I’d still be the envied Mrs. Montgomery, just with a tiny little bit of backlash to take.

That would calm the storm for the company, and Ivy wouldn’t be hurt.

He said it was my fault for causing a scene at the wedding, so I should clean up the mess.

Of course I refused. I just blocked his number.

His parents came after me next.

Warned me to do what they said and stop thinking I could act however I wanted just because I was carrying the Montgomery heir.

I gave them the same treatment and quit my job on the spot.

I wasn’t bad at my job. Plenty of companies had tried to poach me before.

But now when I reached out to each one, everyone clammed up.

I knew it was the Montgomery family’s doing.

They wanted to pressure me into agreeing to the press conference.

But this time, I wasn’t bending.

Another interview fell through. Then an old client reached out. They said their new overseas division needed someone, and the pay wouldn’t be any worse than Montgomery Group’s.

Only catch was the job was abroad. Asked if I was interested.

I was an only child. I thought about my parents. Said I’d think about it.

Back at the hotel, my dad called.

Mom had a headache again.

I took a cab straight home.

I pushed the door open. Chase was there too.

My mom took my bag from me, looking perfectly fine.

I stared at her, my heart heavy. I knew it. My own parents had sold me out again.
