The Day He Called Off Our Engagement, I Bought Iceland Tickets Chapter 10
Michael stood there as if the last shred of his dignity had been stripped away in public.
He opened his mouth, his voice rough and strained.
“Lily, I know you resent me, but I’ll really change. Give me one more chance.”
Lily looked at him without the slightest sign of being moved.
“A chance? I gave you eight years. Was that not enough?”
Michael was left speechless.
He had never seen Lily like this before.
He still wanted to step closer, but Lily took one step back, putting clear distance between them.
“Michael, do you still think I left you just because I was angry?”
She stared at him, and her voice suddenly turned cold.
“Then I’ll make it even clearer. It was never that I wasn’t good enough for you.”
“It’s that the man you are now isn’t good enough for me.”
Michael’s expression changed sharply, as if the words had slapped him across the face.
But Lily did not stop.
“Without your family’s resources and the image they built around you, what do you even have left?”
“You’re not as capable as I am, you don’t take responsibility the way I do, and you have never known where to draw the line.”
“Before, when people said I only managed to stay in this city because of you, I tolerated it. But the truth is, without me, your life would have fallen apart long ago.”
“You came all this way to beg me now, not because you finally realized you loved me.”
“It’s because after I left, you realized no one else would treat you the way I did.”
With every sentence she spoke, Michael’s back stiffened a little more.
His male pride was laid bare by her words.
And yet every word she said was true.
“So stop acting like you’re some devoted lover.”
Lily looked at him, her eyes so calm they were almost cruel.
“You don’t miss me.”
“You miss the version of Lily who kept your life comfortable and never held anything against you.”
“Too bad she’s dead.”
Not far away, one of her colleagues called her name.
Lily did not look at him again. She turned and walked away.
She left him with one final sentence.
“Go home. Don’t come bother me again.”
Michael stood there, his fingertips cold, his throat feeling as if it were stuffed with cotton.
For the first time, he understood with absolute clarity that Lily was truly never coming back.
