The Wedding He Skipped Became My Ticket To An Empire Chapter 04
Ethan didn’t come home all night.
I packed my things, loaded my suitcase into the trunk, and got ready to transfer my grandmother to another hospital.
Just as I pulled out of the garage, a rock slammed into my windshield, and a crowd rushed out from around
the corner. I hit the brakes hard.
“Everyone look! This is the mistress!”
A dozen livestream cameras pointed at my face. Someone yanked open my door and dragged me out.
“Like mother, like daughter. Her mom was a mistress, and now she’s stealing Chloe’s husband.”
My mind went blank. I staggered, nearly falling over. “Did Chloe send you?”
“No. We’re her fans.”
An egg smashed into my forehead. The stinking yolk dripped down half my face. Before I could explain, Chloe’s rabid fans swarmed me.
“She likes stealing men? Tear her clothes off.”
Shaking violently, I could only curl up and cling to my clothes. Fists rained down on me.
“Hey! Break it up! I’m calling the cops.”
The security guard blew his whistle and ran over. The mob scattered.
“Ms. Moreau, are you okay?”
The tears I’d been holding back finally fell. I shook my head.
My phone rang. It was the hospital.
By the time I got there, my grandmother was already in the operating room. The doctor handed me a Do Not Resuscitate form to sign.
“The patient saw the livestream and went into cardiac arrest. Her heart can’t handle it anymore. Do you want to use the custom-made biomechanical heart?”
“The window is only thirty minutes. If you want it, we need it here now.”
“Yes,” I said without hesitation. “Use it. I’ll have it sent right away.”
My hands shook as I signed the consent form. I immediately called Ethan.
“Where is the lab with my grandmother’s custom heart? Have them send it over now.”
Ethan paused for two seconds. His voice sounded strange. “Why do you need it so suddenly?”
There was no time to explain. My voice broke. “Please, Ethan, just have them send it. My grandmother can’t wait much longer.”
“Okay, okay, don’t panic. I’ll have it sent by helicopter.”
After confirming that the lab was only ten minutes away by helicopter, I stared at the location sharing on my screen Every second felt like an eternity. The black dot representing the helicopter moved closer and closer to the hospital. My heart pounded with hope.
Then the helicopter suddenly turned and flew in the opposite direction.
My heart nearly stopped. I called Ethan again and again, but no one answered.
Behind me, the doctor’s heavy voice said, “I’m so sorry, Ms. Moreau. We lost her.”
All the strength drained from my body. I watched helplessly as my grandmother was wheeled out of the OR under a white sheet.
A message from Ethan popped up on my phone.
[Sorry, I got lost again. Wait another ten minutes.]
But on the hospital lobby screen, an art exhibition was being livestreamed. Chloe was introducing her piece,
The Beauty of the Biomechanical Heart.
The displayed item was unmistakably my grandmother’s custom heart.
“Come on, Ethan, are you really not coming to my celebration?” Chloe punched his chest lightly. “That’s kind of lame.”
Ethan didn’t dodge. He smirked and raised an eyebrow. “I let you borrow Sophia’s grandmother’s custom heart for your competition entry. Isn’t that enough? ”
“My girlfriend is still mad at me. I need to go smooth things over, or I’ll really lose her.”
A second later, a news alert flashed on his phone.
[Moreau-Cross Alliance: Ms. Moreau Marries Mr. Cross.]
Ethan’s eyes went wide.
