Why the Mafia’s Wife Kills Chapter 08
Lucius…”
Dante spat the name like poison.
“When did you two get so close?”
“Watch your mouth.” I raised an eyebrow.
“Mr. Morretti and I are old friends. We’re just hanging out.
Unlike some people who cheat on their wives and bring mistresses home.”
“Freya and I are innocent!”
“Innocent?”
I laughed out loud, like he’d told the funniest joke ever.
“Dante, do you think I’m blind? Stupid?
If you’re so innocent, why was she walking out of your study in her sleepwear at midnight?”
Freya went completely white.
Dante stared, shocked. “You… you saw that?”
“I installed cameras.” I said casually.
“The second you brought her home.
Living room. Study. Outside the bedroom. All of it.
You wanna watch the tapes?”
The living room went deathly quiet.
Dante’s fists clenched. Veins popped on his hands.
Freya trembled. Tears fell.
“Get out.”
Dante said to me.
“What?”
“I SAID GET OUT.”
He stared at me, eyes ice.
“Now.”
I nodded and picked up my coat.
“Fine. I’ll leave.
But Dante, you’ll regret this.”
I turned and walked out.
At the door, I paused and looked back.
Dante held Freya, whispering comfort to her.
He didn’t glance at me.
In that moment, the last bit of warmth in my chest died.
The door closed behind me.
I skipped the elevator and took the stairs.
One floor. Two floors.
By the third, my legs went weak.
I leaned against the wall and breathed.
My phone rang. It was Lucius.
“How did it go?” he asked.
“Fell apart.” I sniffled, holding back tears.
“He wants to fight me in court.”
“Figured he would.”
Lucius paused.
“I’m downstairs. Let’s go eat.”
“How are you downstairs?”
“Worried you’d lose your temper. Came to check.” He said simply.
I walked down and saw Lucius’s car parked on the street.
He leaned against it, smoking.
When he saw me, he put it out.
“Crying?” he asked.
“No.” I opened the door and climbed in.
Lucius got in too.
He didn’t start the car right away.
He handed me a tissue pack.
“Cry if you need to. No shame.”
“I said I’m not crying.” I turned to the window.
The car pulled out. Lucius didn’t push it.
At a red light, he suddenly said,
“I called the lawyer. We’ll meet him this afternoon.”
“Okay.”
Lucius glanced at me.
“Dante’s grandfather might get involved.”
My chest tightened.
Antonio Lombardi.
Dante’s grandfather.
The real head of the family.
A brutal man.
Dante only became Don because Antonio said so.
Antonio cared more than anything about the family name.
He wouldn’t let me and Dante tear it apart in court.
“Don’t worry.” Lucius said. “I’ve got you.”
I turned to him. “Lucius, why are you really helping me?”
“I told you.”
He smiled.
“I like you.”
“I’m being serious.”
“So am I.”
Lucius looked at me, his eyes steady.
“Simone, I liked you since high school.
But your family fell apart. Mine too.
I couldn’t say anything.
Then you got married. I thought I missed my chance.
Now…”
He didn’t finish, but I understood.
“I’m still married to Dante.” I said.
“I know.” Lucius turned back to the road.
“So I’ll wait.”
Wait for what?
For me to get divorced?
Then be with him?
I didn’t ask. He didn’t say more.
The car stopped outside an Italian restaurant.
Lucius said the food was light and good for me right now.
We ordered.
Before the food came, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered. “Hello?”
“Simone.” An old, sharp voice on the line.
“It’s Antonio.”
Antonio.
I sat up straight. “Grandpa.”
“You still call me that.”
Antonio snorted.
“Be at the Lombardi mansion tonight at seven.
Come alone. No one else.”
He hung up.
Lucius looked at me. “Antonio?”
“Yeah.” I set my phone down.
“He wants me at the estate tonight.”
“I’m going with you.”
“He said alone.”
I smiled faintly.
“Probably a trap.”
Lucius frowned.
“Even more reason. What if he hurts you-
“He won’t.” I shook my head.
“Antonio cares about his image.
He won’t hurt me openly.
Just pressure me. Take the money and disappear.”
“What are you gonna do?”
“I don’t know.” I told the truth.
“One step at a time.”
The food arrived.
I picked up a fork, but I wasn’t hungry.
Lucius put a piece of steak on my plate.
“Eat. You need energy for tonight.”
I looked at him and suddenly laughed.
“What’s funny?”
“Nothing.”
I shook my head and took a bite.
