Mr. Lloyd’s voice shook as he spoke. “Nadia, how did you even do that? That was a college-level advanced calculus question, yet you solved it with such a smooth, clear line of thought.”
Eugene jumped in first. “Dad, I told you ages ago that Nadia’s a total genius when it comes to this stuff!”
Nancy froze, then blurted in disbelief, “No way. How could you possibly solve a college-level question? You’re nothing but an idiot!”
Right then, the butler hurried back to report, “Sir, I’ve looked into it. This was all Ms. Quill’s doing. She bribed the principal and had her grades swapped with Ms. Colson’s.”
[No way. How could they have found out?]
[Wait, I remember now-Eugene’s parents are on the school board. Of course they could find out!}
David slapped Nancy hard across the face at the butler’s words. “How dare you tamper with the grades, you ungrateful monster? Bringing you home from the orphanage was the biggest mistake we ever made! Go home right now to pack your things. Then, get the hell out of our home!”
She fell to her knees before him and pleaded, “Dad, Mom, please don’t give up on me! I’ll do better, I promise! I know I was wrong this time. I’ll never do it again!”
The comments exploded in misery.

No matter how hard Nancy struggled, David and Helen still threw her out of the Quill family. She ended up wandering the streets.
The next time I saw her was right before the SATs. She suddenly rushed up to me at the school gates, looking hysterical as she grabbed my arm. She hissed, “Tell me the truth, Nadia. Have you been reborn too?”
This time, I didn’t deny it. I simply nodded. “Yes, I’ve been reborn. You’re absolutely right.”
Once she got her answer, she ran off into the distance in a crazed state. No one knew where she went.
I only learned how Nancy’s story ended from the comments before my eyes.

In the days leading up to the SATs, while everyone was burning themselves out cramming, I was out with Stephen and Linda, finalizing our purchase of a huge luxury villa.
Eugene’s parents tried to push for an engagement between him and me, but I turned them down. From the very beginning, I’d only ever seen Eugene as an asset and a stepping stone on my path forward, not someone I needed to cling to.
