I Played His Lover’s Husband Chapter 07

Over the years, I had often dreamed about my eighteenth birthday.

My stepmother drugged me and tried to send me to the bed of a strange older man.

My rescuer was one of the distinguished guests my father had humbly welcomed to my birthday banquet.

We barely even knew each other.

Everyone else looked the other way-cold, indifferent. Only he stepped in.

He grabbed the knife barehanded to save me, and the blade nearly pierced straight through his palm. The

wound was a bloody mess.

My hands trembled as I bandaged him, yet he just exhaled a lazy smoke ring.

The scent was that familiar, soothing cedarwood.

My tears, still laced with fear, fell onto the clumsy, crooked little bow I’d tied around his hand.

“I heard at the banquet that Miss Montgomery likes fireworks?”

I looked up blankly. Then I saw him crush out the cigarette in his other hand.

His long, elegant fingers unfurled before me-like a tiny firework bursting open.

The corners of his eyes crinkled with a smile, his voice gentle, like he was coaxing a child.

“Your very own fireworks show. Don’t cry now. Happy birthday.”

The face that once made my heart race now overlapped perfectly with the face before me.

Time had passed over Dominic without leaving behind a single flaw.

If anything, the years had favored him, gifting him with even more maturity and charm.

During the five years of our engagement, he had always treated me this way.

He enjoyed my pitiful love and admiration, yet never loved me in return.

Instead, he treated my feelings like something he could control whenever he wanted.

Whenever I started pulling away, he would draw me back in.

The second I got too close, he would distance himself again.

He never cared how exhausting that push and pull was for me.

Over time, it wore me down completely.

Dominic smiled-casual, confident, certain I wouldn’t refuse.

“Speechless from happiness?”

“I already arranged the helicopter. I’m taking you to Verona Island today.”

“I promised you before. I’d never miss your birthday.”

Just as I opened my mouth, his phone rang.

Aurora’s tearful voice spilled through the speaker.

“Dominic… I fell off the prop shelf. My leg hurts so much…”
