Early the next morning. I went to the hospital.

The doctor studied my test results with a grave expression. “Ms. Brooks, given your current condition, if you go through

with an induced termination, you may never be able to have children again.”

“If you’re sure, sign here.”

I had always been someone who struggled to get pregnant.

I’d been pregnant once before, when I was twenty-three.

Back then, Adrian had only just started making a name for himself in the research world. At his busiest, I followed him

across three countries in a single week, until I finally collapsed from exhaustion.

When I woke up in the hospital, I found out I’d been a month pregnant. The baby was already gone from all the strain

and constant travel.

That was the first time I had ever seen Adrian cry. He held me tightly and kept apologizing, over and over.

“I’m sorry, Natalie. This is all my fault. I should’ve taken better care of you. I’m so sorry.”

“We’ll have another one someday. We will.”

For six years, we went to a chapel every year to pray for a blessing and to the hospital every month for checkups before

this baby finally came into our lives.

But too much had changed.

I signed the form in silence and followed the nurse toward my room, only to run straight into Chloe.

Her face was rosy, and she looked nothing like someone who had just had the kind of episode Adrian claimed she’d had.

“Natalie, did you come here alone for your prenatal checkup? Why didn’t Professor Carlisle come with you?”

Then her lips curved into a smile. “Oh, right. I almost forgot. He’s picking up my medication for period cramps.”

“He’s seriously overreacting. It’s just normal cramps, but he insisted on bringing me here to get checked out.”

*Same thing last night. I only casually joked that I was a match for you, and he actually wanted you to give me your

heart.”

When I didn’t react, she looked a little annoyed. “Sorry. I made you mad again, didn’t I?”

Adrian heard that last part as he came rushing over, and immediately stepped in front of her with a frown.

“Natalie, can’t you just leave Chloe alone? She’s very weak right now.”

I said nothing and walked past them.

As he watched me walk away. Adrian’s heart skipped a beat for no reason at all.

He stopped the nurse. “Where are you taking her?”

The nurse answered politely. “I’m sorry, sir, but we can’t disclose a patient’s private information.”

He was about to press further when Chloe cut in.

“Where else would she be going? She’s here for a prenatal checkup.”

“Professor Carlisle, you promised you’d take me to a movie today. Come on, let’s go.”

During the two days I stayed in the hospital, I got eighteen missed calls from Adrian.

His texts were edged with frustration.

Adrian: [Why aren’t you coming home, and why aren’t you answering your phone? Throwing a tantrum has its limits. If

you keep this up. I’m only going to get more fed up with you.]

Adrian: [I’m going to Europe on a business trip soon. If there’s anything you want, tell me.]

Adrian: [How did the appointment go? Is everything okay?]

I texted back.

Natalie: [Don’t forget. We’re meeting at the county courthouse tomorrow.]

He replied instantly.

Adrian replied: [Are you serious?]

Adrian replied: [Fine. Just don’t regret it again at the last minute and come up with some excuse about not feeling well]
