Everyone let out a breath of relief.

Then I went on.

“Professor Carlisle and I are getting divorced soon, so congratulations in advance. Looks like you’re getting exactly what you wanted.”

“Natalie.” Adrian’s face darkened. “Don’t start talking nonsense in front of everyone.”

I almost laughed at the irony. “You can kneel in front of all these people and ask me to hand my heart over to Chloe, but I’m not allowed to bring up divorce?”

He frowned. “It was an April Fools’ joke. Why are you making such a huge deal out of it?”

“Chloe already apologized, and I already told her off. If you keep this up, you’re only going to make it impossible for anyone to end this gracefully.”

Our friends started trying to calm me down too.

“Natalie, take it easy. You’re pregnant. Don’t let something this small drive a wedge between you two.”

“Exactly. We all saw how much Adrian cared just now. He never talks to Chloe that harshly.”

At that, I slowly turned to look at Adrian, my voice surprisingly calm. “You weren’t angry because of me. You were angry because Chloe made a joke out of being a match, and when you heard the truth, you were disappointed, weren’t you?”

He froze for half a second, and then irritation flickered between his brows.

“I’m begging you. Can you not do this here?”

“You may not care about your reputation, but Chloe still has hers.”

Exhaustion crashed over me like a wave.

I closed my eyes and said softly, “Fine. I’ll see you at the county courthouse next Monday.”

I stood to leave, but Chloe suddenly dropped to her knees in front of me.

“Natalie, please don’t blame Professor Carlisle, okay? He only wants me to be healthy.”

I looked down at the girl in front of me, tears streaming down her face, and said coldly, “You went through all this trouble to pull that stunt just to prove your place in Adrian’s heart. You must be thrilled right now.”

Her face went deathly pale, as if I had humiliated her beyond bearing.

I looked away and stepped around her.

Then a voice, cold enough to freeze blood, came from behind me.

“Natalie, don’t forget that your mother is still at Carlisle Medical Center.”

My feet stopped dead.

Never in my life had I imagined Adrian would use my mother to threaten me.

After a long silence, I forced a smile onto my face and bent down to help Chloe to her feet.

“Everything I said just now was a joke. I’m not blaming you.”

Her voice trembled. “That’s good. I was so scared I’d caused trouble for Professor Carlisle.”

That was how the farce ended.

Adrian took me home himself.

On the drive, he explained himself in a way he almost never did. “I had no choice but to scare you like that. I’m not going to do anything to your mother.”

“You were wronged today. To make up for it, I’ll go with you to your prenatal appointment tomorrow.”

“Natalie, we’ve been together for more than ten years. It’s not like I feel nothing for you. If possible, I hope you and Chloe can get along.”

Leaning against the window, I stayed perfectly calm.

“I meant what I said today.”

“Adrian, let’s get divorced. From now on, whatever happens between you and her has nothing to do with me.”

The car went silent for two seconds.

Then he let out a low laugh. “This is the seventh time you’ve brought up divorce since you got pregnant. Next time you want to throw a fit, come up with something new.”

The moment the words left his mouth, his phone started ringing sharply through the car.

After answering it, he slammed on the brakes.

“You need to get out. Chloe’s having an episode. I have to go back to her.”

I looked at the torrential rain outside the window, paused for a beat, then opened the door.

His urgent voice came from behind me.

“Find somewhere dry and wait for me. I’ll take her to the hospital and come back for you.”

Late at night, in pouring rain, getting a ride was almost impossible.

I waited in a convenience store until three in the morning before I finally managed to get a ride home.

Those three hours were enough time for Adrian to drive Chloe to the hospital and back ten times over.

But they still weren’t enough for him to take his wife, six months pregnant, home.
