He Faked a Disease to Test Me for Three Years, I Used the Time to Earn My Escape Chapter 10
I tried to make every word clear. “Mason, come back right now. Immediately.”
“Come back? I’m at the construction site. I have to work late today…”
“Please. Come back now. If you don’t, I’ll go to the construction site and find you myself.”
When he heard me start crying again, he immediately said, “Okay, okay. I’m coming back right now. Don’t cry. Wait for me at the group home.”
After hanging up, I collapsed onto the bed as if all the strength had gone out of me.
Mason Lane and I were biological siblings.
Our parents died when we were young. No one adopted us, so we grew up together in the group home.
Mason was two years older than me. He worked himself to the bone, taking any job he could find, and almost every dollar he earned went to me.
He said I was good at school and would have a future, unlike him, who could only do hard labor.
He told me not to worry about money and to focus only on studying.
After I finally got accepted into college, he worked himself past exhaustion to save up for my tuition and got into an accident at the construction site.
When I found out, I ran toward the site.
In my panic, I crossed against the light and was hit by a car.
As I was dying, the System found me. It told me that as long as I completed the mission, I could claim a reward that would let Mason avoid the accident.
I agreed.
When I saw Adrian, who looked almost exactly like Mason, I blurted out Mason’s name.
I took care of Adrian for three years not only because of the System’s mission.
It was also because every time I looked at Adrian, I thought of my real brother.
An hour later, the bedroom door was pushed open, revealing a sun-darkened face full of anxiety.
“Ivy, what happened? Why are your eyes so swollen? Did someone hurt you?”
I threw myself into his arms and cried until I had nothing left.
At first, Mason said he was covered in dust and sweat from work and tried to push me away because he was dirty.
But when he saw that I could not stop crying, he gave up and patted my back again and again until I finally calmed down.
“Tell me. What happened?”
I told him it was nothing. I had just had a nightmare that something had happened to him.
“Mason, don’t go back to the construction site starting tomorrow. Find a different job.”
Mason froze for a second, then smiled.
“Ivy, construction is hard, but the pay is good.”
“You got into such a good college. You have to treasure that and study hard. Don’t worry about money. Leave that to me…”
“I can take out student loans.”
I cut Mason off.
“It’s summer break right now, so I can work with you. Once the semester starts, I can get a part-time job around my classes.”
“You’ve given me more than enough money all these years. You haven’t bought yourself a single new outfit or even a new pair of shoes.”
“I’m grown up now. I can earn money with you.”
