He Gave Everyone a Key but Me Chapter 07
At that moment, the sales consultant walked over.
“Ms. Gibson, would you like us to take the waist in a little more?”
Her voice wasn’t loud, but in the quiet room, it carried perfectly.
The line went silent instantly.
Five full seconds passed before Logan’s voice came back.
This time, it carried a cold edge of barely restrained anger.
“Claire, you actually went and rented a wedding dress?”
“Just to force my hand, you’re willing to take this act that far?”
“Do you really think if you make a big enough scene, I’ll give in?”
I held the phone a little farther from my ear, watching the call timer continue to climb.
“Logan.” I cut him off.
“I wasn’t acting.”
“And I wasn’t forcing you to do anything.”
“I just don’t want you anymore.”
The moment I finished speaking, I hung up and blocked his number.
Finally, the world was quiet.
Kevin stood behind me, watching my reflection in the mirror.
He didn’t ask who had called.
Instead, he handed me a pair of soft flats.
“Put these on.”
“Your feet will hurt if you stand in those heels too long.”
I spent the entire weekend packing.
When I actually started sorting through five years of memories, I was surprised by how quickly everything disappeared.
All those things I’d once treasured were nothing more than worthless clutter without emotion attached to them.
On Sunday afternoon, the moving truck pulled up downstairs.
The movers worked quickly. In less than thirty minutes, all my boxes were gone.
The apartment suddenly felt empty.
Only Logan’s designer suits and limited-edition sneakers remained.
I left the key on top of the shoe cabinet.
Then I took one last look at the place I’d lived in for five years and walked away without a trace of regret.
My new apartment was downtown, only a ten-minute walk from my office.
Kevin had helped me find it.
The security was excellent, and the neighborhood was quiet.
I had just hung the last piece of clothing in the closet when Amanda called.
“Claire, are you all moved in?”
“Yeah. Just finished.”
“That bastard Logan hasn’t given you any trouble, has he?”
Worry filled Amanda’s voice.
“He’s out of town on a business trip. He won’t be back until tomorrow.”
I folded an empty cardboard box and leaned it beside the door.
“Good.”
Amanda let out a relieved breath.
“Oh, and have you and Kevin finalized the wedding invitations? I want to be the first person who gets one.”
“We have.” I smiled. “I’ll bring yours tomorrow.”
After hanging up, I poured myself a glass of warm water.
Watching the sky darken outside the window, I felt completely at peace for the first time in years.
The next evening, just after work, an unfamiliar number appeared on my phone.
I answered.
“Claire.” Logan’s voice came through immediately. The anger he was suppressing was obvious.
“What the hell does it mean that you cleared out the apartment?”
He had clearly just returned from his business trip and opened the door to find the place nearly empty.
“It means exactly what it looks like.”
I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of my apartment, looking down at the stream of traffic below.
“We broke up.”
“Broke up?” Logan let out a cold laugh.
“Because I didn’t give you a key to the new place?”
“Because Mr. Harrison brought up marriage and I didn’t say yes?”
“Claire, when did you become this materialistic? This unreasonable?”
He still thought I was using a breakup as leverage and still believed I was trying to force him into giving me what I wanted.
“Fine.”
“I’ll get you a key tomorrow. Happy now?”
“Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”
His voice carried the same familiar patience he used whenever he thought I was being irrational.
“No.”
I looked out at the city lights beginning to glow below.
“Logan.”
“I’m serious.”
“I don’t want your key anymore.”
“And I don’t want you either.”
