He Gave Everyone a Key but Me Chapter 08

The line went silent for several seconds before a loud crash echoed through the phone.

“Was that Amanda’s idea?”

Logan’s voice turned icy.

“Her love life is a disaster, so she can’t stand seeing anyone else happy, right?”

“Claire, do you have a mind of your own? Do you believe everything people tell you?”

“You really think you’ll find someone better than me?”

As always, he pushed the blame onto Amanda, an outsider.

It could never possibly be his fault.

I sighed. “Logan, you’re honestly pathetic.”

Before he could reply, I hung up and blocked that number too.

At eight that evening, I had just finished showering and was sitting on the couch drying my hair when the doorbell rang.

I checked the video doorbell.

It was Kevin. He was carrying a thermal food container.

I opened the door.

“I made some rib soup. Drink it while it’s hot.”

Kevin set the container on the dining table and naturally took the towel from my hands.

“If you don’t dry your hair properly, you’ll end up with a headache.”

Standing behind me, he gently dried my hair, his warm breath brushing past my ear.

“We’re doing the menu tasting tomorrow. Do you have time?”

“I do.”

I closed my eyes and enjoyed the rare peace.

“Kevin.”

“Hmm?”

“Thank you.”

He laughed softly.

“Claire, if you keep thanking me, I’m going to start charging interest.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the moment I stepped out of the office building, I saw Logan.

He was leaning against a black Maybach, a freshly lit cigarette between his fingers.

His brows were tightly furrowed, irritation radiating from every inch of him.

The second he spotted me, he tossed the cigarette away and strode over.

“Claire.”

He stepped directly into my path, eyes locking onto mine.

“It’s been three days. You done being mad yet?”

There it was again.

That absolute certainty.

As if my disappearance was nothing more than a childish attempt to get attention.

I ignored him and walked around him.

“Stop.”

Logan grabbed my wrist. The grip was hard enough to make me frown.

“What exactly do you want?”

His voice came out through clenched teeth.

“I transferred Tinsley to another department. I even had a new key made for you.”

He pulled a brand-new key from his pocket and forced it into my hand.

“Quit this nonsense and come home.”

The metal pressed coldly into my palm.

Even now, he believed the smallest concession from him should be accepted with gratitude.

I jerked my hand free and the key hit the ground with a sharp clatter.

“I told you.”

“We broke up.”

Logan’s expression darkened instantly.

He stared at the key on the pavement as if it were something impossible to understand.

“Claire, don’t push your luck.”

He stepped forward, reaching for me again.

Just then, a black Bentley rolled to a stop beside us.

The window lowered as Kevin’s calm profile came into view.

“Claire, get in.”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a quiet authority that couldn’t be ignored.

Logan froze. His eyes moved from Kevin to me, then he let out a cold laugh.

“So this is your actor?”

“Kevin Todd?”

He walked over to the Bentley and looked down at Kevin.

“Buddy, stop helping her put on this ridiculous show.”

Kevin didn’t get angry. He didn’t even look at Logan.

Instead, he opened the door and stepped out.

He stood half a head taller than Logan. The difference in presence was immediate.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Kevin’s voice was calm, as if they were discussing the weather.

“Allow me to introduce myself.”

“My name is Kevin Todd.”

“I’m Claire’s fiancé.”
