Her Last Night in the City Chapter 06
Elena shook her head frantically. “No, baby. I want them to be okay. I just have a bad temper.”
“Bad temper?” Nico hit her again. “You hired someone to kill them!”
She went white. “That’s a misunderstanding.”
“That guy is in the basement,” Nico said coldly. “Natalie didn’t take the gold. You did. You hid it. You deleted
the security footage. You planted your own ring at another man’s place and framed her.”
Elena panicked. “I did it because I love you! I was scared of losing you!”
“Don’t call me baby,” Nico roared, shoving her back. “I regret ever touching you. You destroyed my family.”
Elena realized the act was over. She let out a cold laugh. “You think you’re innocent? You wanted me. You
walked away from your mistress and chose me. You’re just as guilty.”
Nico raised his fist. Elena caught his wrist. Her eyes went wild.
“Forgotten who you’re dealing with?” she hissed. “I’ll kill you, make it look like an accident, and inherit
everything.”
She reached for a knife.
“Don!” His men burst in with backup. They took Elena down.
“Please!” Elena completely fell apart. She screamed and thrashed. “I’m sorry! Don’t send me to prison!”
Nico looked down at her. “Thirty stolen gold bars. Enjoy your time behind bars.”
They dragged her out.
His phone rang. The hospital.
“Don, Natalie’s awake.”
Nico ran to the hospital. He stood outside her door for a long moment, then knocked.
“Can I come in?” he asked quietly.
“Yes.”
He walked in and stood across the room.
“Thank you,” I said.
He looked ashamed. “Don’t. I’m Luca’s father and we cared about each other. This was all Elena’s fault. I’m
sorry.”
I stayed calm. “Don’t say that. You loved her.”
“That’s not how it was,” he insisted. “I regretted marrying her within six months. I looked for you the whole
time. She tricked me. I dreamed about you every night. I kept thinking about what we could’ve had…”
He kept talking. I just listened.
“I’ll divorce her,” he said finally. “We can start over. I’ll give you everything. Luca will have the best life possible.”
I shook my head. “Let it go, Nico.” I looked down. “Maybe once I wanted that. Not anymore.”
“Natalie…” Tears ran down his face.
“I won’t stop you from being in Luca’s life. But you and me, we can’t go back.”
The most powerful Don in the city cried like a child in front of me.
In the months that followed, Nico came every day. I stayed polite. Luca kept his distance.
On the day Luca was discharged, Nico was waiting out front. His car had an Optimus Prime sticker on it.
Luca didn’t smile. “Don’t try so hard.”
“I just want to celebrate your birthday,” Nico said. He threw me a look that was asking for help.
“Come on, Luca. Today’s worth celebrating.” We got in the car.
It was just the three of us at the party. No other guests. Nico had a massive cake and fireworks.
Afterward, Nico handed me a black card. “To make up for things.”
I took it. “I won’t spend a single cent on myself. It’s all for Luca.”
He nodded and swallowed hard.
“Mom,” Luca ran over with his toy. “Let’s go home.”
I took his hand.
Under the streetlights, our shadows stretched out long. Behind me, I heard Nico start to cry.
Luca stopped and turned around. He waved. “Bye, Dad.”
Nico waved back, forcing a smile. But when we were far enough away, he dropped to his knees and buried
his face in his hands.
“I’m sorry,” he said to the empty street. “I’m so sorry.”
