His kiss turned brutal. His fingers burned against my lower back. He grabbed the hem of my dress.

I bit him again, hard. He winced and pulled back.

“Dominic, have you lost your mind? Untie me!”

“I lost my mind a long time ago. You’ve never thought I was sane anyway.” He gripped my chin, and that thick, possessive darkness was back in his eyes.

I had always been terrified of him, ever since I learned he was the villain in this story.

Who would willingly tangle with a madman? But here he was, and he wasn’t letting go.

His body pressed against mine. He kissed my neck, then lower.

“Dominic, you—” I pushed against his shoulders. How could he do this?!

My face burned. I was stiff, trembling, helpless.

He patted my hip, coaxing. “Relax.”

“You—you bastard!” I bit my lip, fighting to keep my voice steady.

He chuckled, wiping his mouth. “Your actions say more than your words ever do.”

When had he become this shameless?

His eyes darkened. He started unbuttoning his shirt.

Then a cry from the other room. Ava was having trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar place.

Dominic froze. I shoved him away.

When I reached the kids’ room, Nathan was already there, hovering uncertainly, not sure how to comfort her.

“Mommy, I’m scared. Let’s go home. I want Uncle Jake,” Ava reached for me.

I soothed her quietly. The moment Dominic heard that name, his face went black. Ava glanced at him and cried harder.

I rubbed her back. “It’s okay, sweetheart. Mommy’s here. We’ll go back soon. Just rest, okay?”

It took a long time to calm her down. I told her a story. Nathan watched from the side, something wistful in his eyes.

“Want to stay with her?” I asked him. He nodded.

I lay down between them. It took four fairy tales before they finally fell asleep.

Nathan’s small fingers clutched the edge of my shirt and didn’t let go.

Through the crack in the door, I saw Dominic still standing there, leaning against the frame.

For a moment, his eyes held something rare, a softness I almost didn’t recognize.
