“Then I’ve got nothing to say.”

I couldn’t let him find out Ava was his, I would never win a custody battle.

I had already lost Nathan; I wasn’t losing Ava too.

“Who’s Ava’s father? How did you meet? Did you love him? Did you love him so much that you’d still be loyal after he died?”

His rage was volcanic. Years of buried jealousy had grown thorns inside him. A living rival he could deal with, a dead one left him powerless.

I kept my mouth shut.

Frustrated, he bit my lip in punishment. The kiss was suffocating. He held the back of my head, refusing to let me pull away.

“Why are you so cold to me? Why do you laugh with everyone else and never give me a kind word?” His voice cracked.

He dragged me into the bathroom. His black suit fell to the floor. Heat radiated off his body.

I flushed. “Dominic, what are you doing?”

“Proving I’m not worse than any of them.”

His mouth found my neck, his hand gripping my waist. He tilted my chin up, forcing me to look at us in the mirror.

That night, I didn’t want to remember. He kept me suspended between pleasure and frustration, trying to pry the truth out of me. I didn’t break.

He was good, too good. We changed the sheets twice.

After that, I gave him the cold shoulder for days.

He restricted my freedom, no going out, the kids were picked up by staff, and he took my phone. I felt like I was back in that gilded cage again, suffocating.

But he was busy. He couldn’t watch me every second.

At the end of the month, he left for Crestwood on a business trip, in a rush.

I knew why: Victoria was going through a divorce. Dominic would take advantage of that. He always ran to her.

Sometimes I envied her. Everyone loved her. I had nothing.

I had done nothing wrong in my life, yet my childhood had been miserable, and now I was alone in the world.

A knock broke my spiral. Ava peeked in. “I’m ready, Mommy.”

Tonight, we were escaping Ashford City.
