I Picked Up a College Guy, Then My Mafia Ex Caught Me Chapter 15

Before I could process it, Dominic stepped closer, his eyes dark with renewed hunger. “It’s late. Let’s sleep.”

I backed away. “Don’t. The kids are next door.”

If Ava woke up, I wasn’t going to be the one soothing her tonight.

At the mention of them, he steadied himself.

He took a breath, patted his pocket, probably looking for a cigarette. Then his brow furrowed. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“My lighter’s gone.”

He was unusually tense. He went downstairs, retracing his steps. Nothing. He looked like he had lost the company seal.

“It’s just a lighter. Buy a new one.”

At that, he gave me a complicated look I couldn’t decipher.

Without a word, he walked outside. He searched everywhere. Finally, he found it in the back seat of his car, that old brass lighter. He brought it back like a recovered treasure.

I couldn’t help asking. “Is it some limited edition or something?”

“No.” He stared at me. “You gave it to me.”

I was stunned. “When?”

“You don’t remember.” His shoulders slumped. “You never remember anything about me.”

I pressed him, but he wouldn’t say more, like a sulking child.

After that, he grew strange. He would hole up in his study after work and barely spoke to me, radiating a miserable, world-weary energy.

All because I had forgotten the lighter? I still couldn’t recall it.

One weekend, an elegant woman with long curls came by.

She greeted me, then went upstairs to his study. They stayed in there for hours. Week after week, she came.

Was she his new girlfriend? But he wouldn’t bring her to the house, would he?

As I was zoning out, Nathan tugged my sleeve and showed me his latest Lego creation. I praised him, he had put it together without the instructions.

“Sweetie, do you know the lady who just went upstairs?”

He nodded.

“Is she close to your dad?”

He nodded again.

My chest tightened. Even Nathan, who rarely noticed anything, thought so.

Then Nathan looked at my expression and spoke slowly. “She’s… his therapist.”

I blinked. Dominic was seeing a therapist?

Why?
