My Boyfriend Faked His Death, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 03

His words dragged me back to bad memories.

He always thought he was right. But not this time.

The hate online wasn’t just words.

Two years ago, I was hiding out in a rundown trailer park in some random city. Like a rat. Only dared to go out at night.

One freezing winter night—I remember it was so, so cold—I bundled up and walked to the nearest supermarket for some discounted groceries.

On the way back, someone followed me.

He pulled up my ID photo that had been leaked online. Asked if I was Avery Reed.

I shook my head in terror. The next second, he shoved me into a man-made lake with a thin sheet of ice on top.

I couldn’t swim. The cold clawed into my bones.

I almost died there. In that lake. That winter night.

Drowning, I thought, half-conscious: if I die here, does that pay back Carter’s life? Does that cancel out the crime everyone says I committed?

Then Carter’s phone rang.

He saw the caller ID and softened instantly. “Mia and I are at the market picking up fish. You said you wanted some? Come find us?”

He hung up and said, “Bought her a brand new Mercedes last month. We go abroad every year—she’s done four continents. Hermès on her birthday every year. And an allowance that’s just ridiculous.”

“You regret that yet? If you hadn’t dumped me, this’d be your life.” Carter smirked.

I didn’t answer. Just took off my fish-cleaning gloves and handed him the plastic bag with the fish.

Carter’s eyes locked onto my hand. On the plain band on my finger.

“You got married?!”
