My Boyfriend Faked His Death, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 04
Before I could answer, I saw Kendra Vance—the girl who’d bullied me in high school.
I hadn’t expected that Carter’s wife was her.
The second he saw her, Carter’s rattled expression vanished. He smiled and said hi, though his eyes were still distracted.
Kendra wore a tailored wool coat. Perfect hair, smelled nice. Her diamond ring still sparkled like crazy even in a fish market.
“Wait… Avery Reed?” Kendra sounded uncertain. “Selling fish at a market?”
“That’s so sad. No wonder I haven’t heard from you. Guess you didn’t make it.” She fanned herself with her diamond-ring hand and fake-sighed.
Then she saw the fish I was holding. Kendra dramatically covered her mouth. “Oh my god, babe, is fish from a market even clean? Let’s go to that seafood supermarket instead. Safer.”
She said it to Carter, but loud enough for me to hear.
“The fish is fresh. I watched her clean it,” Carter said, exasperated.
“No. I feel sick looking at all this blood. So gross.” Kendra pouted.
Carter gave in. He stepped toward me. “Sorry, we don’t want the fish.”
I kept holding the bag. “Already cleaned. No refunds.”
Carter’s eyes swept over me. “I’m not asking for my money back. Take it home and eat it. Look how thin you are. Your cheeks are hollow. You’re not taking care of yourself.”
Kendra had looked annoyed at the thought of not getting a refund, but now she put on a different face. “God, Avery, you look old. Like pushing forty. Just take the damn fish. Don’t be weird about it.”
Years hadn’t changed Kendra.
Back in school, Kendra tormented me for fun. Tearing up my tests was nothing. Gluing my chair. Locking me in the bathroom, yanking my hair, forcing me to drink mop water.
But teachers saw her as the perfect student. Trophies in every competition. Played piano and violin. Had a driver drop her off every morning. Total queen bee.
She and Carter were childhood sweethearts.
No one suspected that Kendra Vance would bother with some average nobody.
I tried to tell. I begged for help. No one believed me.
Not even my boyfriend at the time. Carter.
He’d been leaning on a railing, relaxed. Then his face went serious. “Avery, you can’t accuse someone just because you’re jealous.”
“Kendra’s not like that. Do you have proof?”
I went pale. Shook my head. “No.”
No cameras in the bathroom. And Kendra could make sure the hallways had none either.
Kendra, standing next to Carter, gave me her victory smile.
She targeted me because she liked Carter.
But when I was getting hurt, Carter didn’t take my side.
He didn’t believe me.
Even after I showed him my uniform stained with bathroom water.
So one night, after another round of piecing together my shredded test, I made a decision.
I broke up with Carter.
I thought, if I’m not his girlfriend anymore, maybe Kendra will stop.
It didn’t work.
