My Boyfriend’s Weekend Escape Was With My Best Friend Chapter 06
Jason didn’t take me seriously. “So we make more. Are you really going to nickel-and-dime me over this?”
“Chloe has never had to rough it. You expected her to share a room with strangers?”
I closed my eyes. I held back the tears threatening to fall.
Back when I was in the hospital, I stayed in a six-bed room. Money was tight, so I never even asked to be moved to a four-bed.
I couldn’t sleep at night because of all the snoring and moaning. Jason always told me to suck it up. Everyone else could handle it, so why couldn’t I?
But he never made Chloe wait. He never made her endure anything.
This time, I didn’t want to wait or endure anymore either.
“She doesn’t have to suffer, so I should suffer with you? You spent our wedding money just to make her more comfortable. How long would it take to save another five thousand?”
Jason licked his lips and said quietly, “Can’t you have a little patience? What’s the rush?”
We’d known each other for five years. I’d stayed with him through the hardest times, when we had nothing. Things were finally starting to look up.
And now we were right back where we started.
Since he didn’t care about our wedding at all, there was no reason for me to wait anymore.
I turned to look at Chloe. A moment ago, I’d been able to speak firmly to Jason. But facing her, my voice faltered.
In the end, I only managed to say, very quietly, “You don’t have to sneak around behind my back for your weekend escapes anymore. This time, I’m the one leaving.”
I ignored Chloe calling my name, running until I reached a corner in the hallway, where I stopped, crouched down, hugged myself, and cried so hard I couldn’t breathe.
A group of nurses rushed past me. “The patient in the deluxe room fell out of bed! I think he broke his leg!”
I wiped my eyes and walked in the opposite direction.
It was late when I got home. I looked around at Jason’s clothes scattered everywhere, his throw pillow, his favorite collectible figures lined up on the shelf.
I grabbed a box and packed everything that belonged to him.
Most of the things in this apartment we’d picked out together. I thought they’d last us until the wedding.
I didn’t expect to be getting rid of them so soon.
I stacked the boxes neatly by the front door and texted Jason: [Come pick up your things.]
Jason didn’t reply. I went to work as usual and volunteered for a big project at the office.
My coworker looked at me in surprise. “You always avoid the hard projects. What’s gotten into you?”
Taking on a project like this meant constant overtime. But the company offered bonuses and overtime pay, and the completion bonus was several times higher than a regular project.
Jason used to say we couldn’t both be at the office every night. So I always left early to make him dinner. I gave up my career opportunities for him.
Now work was all I had to rely on.
I smiled at my coworker. “What can I say? The money’s too good.”
I worked my ass off for a week, staying until two or three in the morning. Some nights I was so tired I just slept at the office.
After I sent that text to Jason, I blocked his number.
When I went home that weekend, Jason’s boxes were still there. They were blocking the doorway. Since he didn’t want them, I wasn’t going to keep them. I dumped everything outside.
The moment my head hit the pillow, I was out cold.
A knock on the door woke me up. I opened it to find Jason standing there on crutches, furious.
“You threw all my stuff outside! What if someone steals it?”
I was still groggy, so my tone came out even harsher. “Where else do you put trash?”
Jason peered past me into the apartment. “You didn’t hide some guy in here, did you? Is that why you were in such a hurry to get rid of my things?”
