My Boyfriend’s Weekend Escape Was With My Best Friend Chapter 07
I lost my temper and slapped Jason across the face.
I’d always been gentle and careful around him, we’d never even had a real fight, let alone me laying a hand on him. This was the first time.
Jason was stunned. He stood there frozen for a few seconds.
Then he seemed to realize he’d gone too far. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just said the first thing that came to mind.”
I cut him off. “No, you said exactly what you were thinking.”
He’d always been like this, paranoid, suspicious. Back then, I thought it was possessiveness, and I kind of liked it.
Now I understood. He had never trusted me.
He never talked about Chloe with that kind of suspicion.
There was a time Chloe and her boyfriend were fighting because he suspected she was seeing someone else. Her boyfriend came over to drink with Jason.
And Jason said, “If she’s seeing someone else, it’s because you weren’t good enough.”
Looking back, maybe he was the one she was seeing.
Jason looked at me urgently. “I know everything you said at the hospital was just anger. I was worried about Chloe’s condition. I figured you would understand, right?”
“I tried to go after you to explain, but I fell out of bed and made my injury worse.”
He glanced down at his crutches. “I can’t work for a while.”
“You always used to complain I didn’t spend enough time with you. So take some time off too. I’ll stay home and take care of you. We’ll make up for all the lost time. Okay?”
I laughed to myself. He wasn’t looking for quality time. He was looking for a nurse.
“We broke up. Did you lose your hearing too?”
Jason forced a smile and tried to hobble inside, but I blocked the door.
“We’re engaged. Both families already know. The wedding plans are in motion. Why do you keep throwing around the word ‘breakup’ every time you get mad?”
“I just called your mother. She said you should stay home and take care of me. She’ll come visit when she has time.”
My cold expression flickered. A wave of exhaustion washed over me.
My mother had been a housewife her whole life, devoted to my father. Everything revolved around him. Even I came second.
After Jason and I got together, she started expecting the same from me. That was why Jason felt so entitled.
Jason must have thought hearing that my mother was coming would make me cave.
Instead, I kicked him in the leg. “Then call my mother. She can take care of you. I have to work. I don’t have time for a stranger.”
Jason cried out in pain and crashed to the ground.
I slammed the door and called home, my head throbbing from the constant overtime and lack of sleep.
As soon as the call connected, my mother’s voice came through. “Stella, Jason said you two had a fight? You’re about to get married, and you’re acting like a child.”
“Marriage is about compromise. What’s going to happen after the wedding? I told him to go back home. You take some time off and take care of him. I’ll come see you when I can.”
I was quiet for a long time.
