My Coworker Asked About My Secret Husband, I Said Strangers Chapter 09
On Monday, news of what happened at the networking event had spread through the office.
I had to admire how fast the rumor mill worked.
I realized that no matter how thick-skinned you are, you can’t work alongside Elena in this environment. I’m not going to put myself through that.
I’d truly loved Brandon once, but I didn’t anymore.
That afternoon, Brandon brought his team to Apex for a presentation. The creative department hadn’t secured all of Vanguard’s design work.
Besides Creative, the meeting included Marketing and Operations.
When it was my turn to present, I walked through my slides calmly. I didn’t let my eyes land on Brandon once.
But I could feel him watching me.
This was my last presentation here. If everything went well, I’d get the promotion and leave.
When I first saw the opportunity, I’d been nervous about moving to another country. But suddenly, I wasn’t scared anymore. I just wanted to try.
After the meeting, Brandon stepped forward and grabbed my arm. Elena hurried to catch up with him.
His voice was cool and slightly raspy. “Let’s have lunch together.”
I smiled and glanced at Elena. “No thanks, cousin.”
I let the word hang there.
Everyone around us looked confused.
Brandon’s expression darkened. He said my name through clenched teeth. “Madison Hart. I have no interest in pretending to be your cousin when I’m your husband.”
Elena hadn’t expected that. Surprise flickered across my face as well.
Everyone’s eyes went to Elena. She’d been acting like Brandon’s love interest all this time, and now she was humiliated.
She cared a lot about appearances. Her cheeks turned red, and she rushed out.
I watched her go. “Brandon, you could still win her back.”
He laughed coldly, looking down at me. “Why would I want her back? My wife is you. And you’re standing right here.”
