My Husband’s Double Love for Me and My Best Friend
Chapter 06
The person on the other end of the line dared not speak further, fearing to enrage him.
“What the hell are you talking about?” he roared, the words tearing from his throat. “She’s not dead-she can’t be!”
After he spoke, everyone in the hospital stared at him with disdain.
He burst out of the hospital like a madman.
LA’s rainy season had just brought a sudden downpour that ended as quickly as it started.
I had a long dream, replaying the past between Sebastian and me like a montage.
As a teenager, he’d smiled with crinkled eyes, holding my hand and saying:
“If I ever betray you, let me rot in hell, he said. Don’t ever forgive me!”
“But I’ll never betray you, he added. I love you, Lena.”
Later, he betrayed me, hurt me-he broke his own oath…
My eyes fluttered open. A familiar face hovered above me, his expression unreadable-a turbulent mix of worry, anger.
and something else I couldn’t name.
When he saw I’d woken up, he rushed over: “Lena, you’re awake!”
I hesitated, staring at him without speaking for a long time.
Elias-why had he come back to the States?
Before I could clear up my confusion, he spoke abruptly:
I’ll get the doctor!”
Only after the doctor pronounced me stable-dehydrated, shocked, but miraculously in one piece-did some of the
tension leave Elias’s shoulders. He dragged a chair to the bedside and sat, fixing me with a look that was equal parts reltet
and reproach.
“You’re getting bolder, he said. Enduring so much grievance without a word.”
“If I hadn’t found out you were kidnapped, if I hadn’t rushed to save you, were you planning to die a futile death!”
My ears were almost numb from his rambling.
I smiled faintly: “But you’re so foresighted, I said. You came just in time to save me
At that, he stuffed his hands in his pockets, pretending to be angry and turning his head away
I reached out and tugged his sleeve: “Alright, I said. I’m safe and sound, aren’t I?”
The door to the private room flew open with a force that made the wall shudder.
A figure filled the doorway. Elias was on his feet in an instant, a protective hand outstretched as if to shield me.
My eyes darted to the doorway, then dropped to my hands twisted in the thin hospital blanket. A hot wave of shame
washed over me.
Several taps of a cane against the floor echoed, followed by a serious, heavy voice:
“Lena Carter! What a fool, he roared. Letting a man almost kill you-are you even worthy of being my daughter!”
I never thought such a thing would bring my father back from Paris. He and Grandpa hadn’t returned in years after
settling there.
I quickly got up, pouting and pulling at his sleeve: “Dad, why are you here, I said. I’m fine, really-don’t be angry!”
Father suddenly tapped my forehead, looking at me with disappointment and exasperation: “Of course I’m here to back
up my rebellious daughter, he said! To let those scoundrels know they’ve messed up!”
I said nothing.
Father tilted his head, his expression solemn: “My precious daughter, he said. Don’t tell me you still can’t bear to take
him down?”
I shook my head violently.
‘No, I can, I said.”
I’ll personally tear off his ugly mask, I vowed. I’ll make him lose everything!”
Three days later was Mr. Montgomery’s birthday. All the who’s who in LA had been invited.
Before getting out of the car, Sebastian tried calling Lena several times, but only a cold automated voice replied:
“I’m sorry, the number you’re calling is not available…”
He slammed his hand on the steering wheel. Chloe, sitting in the passenger seat, didn’t dare speak for a moment
It wasn’t until a servant urged them to get out that she found the courage to speak:
“Why are you so angry, Sebastian, she said. Maybe Lena’s already there.”
This is just her way. A dramatic exit, a dramatic return. All to keep you on a string.”
Sebastian’s eyes, dark and turbulent, met hers. Some of the frantic energy seemed to drain from him at her words, replaced by a weary, familiar resentment.
Three days with no news-but he refused to believe it. Lena, who loved life and freedom so much, couldn’t be dead
Besides, she loved him too much to leave him.
She took his arm, her grip possessive Head held high, a smirk playing on her perfectly glossed lips, she swept past the gauntlet of staring guests. She didn’t just enter the Montgomery estate, she made an entrance.
“Lena, she thought. Your man, your everything-they’ll all be mine!”
“And you’ll be nothing but a wandering ghost, forever adrift in this world!”
