My Online Boyfriend Mistook Me for Someone Else—I Left Chapter 07
But in the grand scheme of things, none of it mattered anymore.
During the final two months leading up to the SATs, Weston Sterling and Cynthia Valentine practically vanished from campus. The rumors said they were locked down, finalizing their applications to study abroad.
Word also went around that Wilder Vance had planned to go abroad with them back in freshman year. But somewhere along the line, he had completely changed his mind, choosing to stay back and face the grueling gauntlet of the SAT instead.
Everything was moving on its designated track.
By the time the final mock exam rankings were posted, my name sat comfortably at ranked third in the entire senior class.
That afternoon, Weston happened to return to school to pick up some remaining paperwork. I was standing under the massive bulletin board, scanning the list, when a tall figure stepped up right beside me.
“Where are you planning to apply?” his voice drifted over.
I blinked, genuinely caught off guard that he was initiating a conversation. We hadn’t spoken a word in over a year. The anonymous digital identity of ‘May’ had been buried in a dead account for just as long.
I kept my tone neutral. “Columbia University.”
Weston raised an eyebrow, a faint, complex smile playing on his lips. “Nice.”
“I was originally aiming for NYU. Would’ve been just a subway ride away from Columbia.”
But now, he was bound for a glamorous future abroad with Cynthia. They had an enviable, perfect life mapped out across the ocean.
I offered a polite smile, choosing to say nothing.
He turned and walked away. After his shadow cleared the corridor, I stood there for a long moment. Maybe it was the nostalgia of graduation, or maybe the ghost of my high school crush was demanding a proper burial, but I suddenly felt the urge to give him a real goodbye.
He probably wouldn’t even show up for the graduation photo session. This might literally be the last time I ever saw him alive.
I quickened my pace, chasing after his retreating figure down the stairs. But before I could call out his name, I caught the sound of his voice speaking into his phone.
“I asked her for you. She’s aiming for Columbia University. You two used to be close, why the hell couldn’t you just ask her yourself?”
The person on the other end said something that made Weston let out a low chuckle, his tone dripping with fond exasperation. “Cynthia’s waiting for me outside the gates. I’m hanging up.”
I froze on the steps, my fingers curling tight against my palms.
I quietly stepped back into the shadows, letting him walk away for good.
To him, Cynthia Valentine was his May. And that name was something I would never use again.
