Eugene’s brows drew together as he snapped, “Mr. and Mrs. Quill, what you’ve done to Nancy is abuse. It’s illegal!”
With a look from David, the butler immediately went to call the family doctor.
Over an hour later, the bleeding finally stopped Nancy woke up, but she was still extremely weak. The moment she opened her eyes and saw David and Helen, she instinctively shrank back.
Then, her gaze landed on me, and it instantly turned vicious. “What are you doing here, Nadia? You came to laugh at me, didn’t you? Well, listen up. Even if I’ve fallen this low, I still have things you’ll never be able to have!”
[That’s right. Even if Nancy is down for now, she’s still the female lead. She’ll rise again!]
[Don’t get cocky, Nadia. Nancy is only temporarily down on her luck!]
Before I could say anything, Eugene stepped forward. “How could you say that, Kancy? If Nadia hadn’t insisted on coming to check on you today, you might already be dead.”
Nancy snorted. “I don’t believe for a second that she’s that kind. She just wanted to see me make a fool of myself.”
At that, David turned to Eugene and explained, “Don’t get the wrong idea about this. We weren’t abusing Nancy. It’s just that she’s disappointed us too many times, and we were a bit too harsh. You should already know that we adopted her from an orphanage. We had high hopes for her, but she’s let us down again and again.”
He paused and turned to look at me. “If only we’d chosen Nadia back then instead.”
Eugene’s eyes lit up when he heard that. He said, “I know you want to groom an heir that you can be proud of. You’re right about Nancy not having what it takes. Nadia’s different, though. She’s truly outstanding.”
The moment he said that, Nancy lost it. Ignoring her injuries, she started screaming, “No, don’t say that! Mom, Dad, you have to believe me. I’ll work hard, I swear! From now on, I won’t even sleep if that’s what it takes. I’ll make sure I become the daughter you want! Please don’t abandon me!
“Nadia isn’t outstanding at all. She’s just found a way to fake all of this! She’s been lying to you from the very beginning. She isn’t capable of anything at all!”
David was so furious that he slapped her across the face. “It’s bad enough that you’re useless yourself. How can you slander Nadia? She’s your older sister!”
Helen didn’t even spare her a glance. Instead, she looked straight at me, her expression solemn. “Nadia, you know what our family’s situation is like. Unlike your adoptive parents, we’re very wealthy.
“Because of that, we need a legitimate, capable heir to take over. If you’re willing, we’ll pour all our resources into grooming you. Will you do it?”
[You can’t! David and Helen, you can’t abandon Nancy! She’s the female lead! How can you cast her aside?]
[Nadia’s nothing but a villainess. Choose her, and you’ll regret it for the rest of your lives!]
I met the Quills’ hopeful gazes and rejected them without the slightest hesitation. “Sorry, but I’m not interested.”
Everyone froze in shock.
Nancy was the first to snap back to her senses. She let out a derisive laugh. “There you go again with your pretentious act—you make it seem like you’re so noble and lofty.”
David frowned at me. “Why not, Nadia? Do you have any idea what our family can give you? The family you’re with now is so poor that they don’t even own a house. We’re not like that-we can give you opportunities you would never get otherwise. That’s enough for you to become anything you want.”
Eugene tried to persuade me too. “Yeah, Nadia. Don’t be silly. You’re too excellent for the life you’re living now. You deserve something better.”
Nancy’s face turned red with rage when she heard that.
I merely smiled. “There’s no real reason I just don’t want this.”
In my last life, my days in the Quill household hadn’t been much better than Nancy’s. I was only a little luckier because I put in more effort.
I slept less than two hours a night and forced myself to master every kind of etiquette. I also learned horseback riding, archery, and many other skills, all just to win David and Helen’s favor.
But they were never satisfied. They trained me like I was some kind of robot.
In the end, I did become very accomplished. But being trapped in that gilded cage for so long had made me lose who I really was.
Sometimes, I imagined that even if Nancy hadn’t killed me in my last life, I probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer, anyway.
It was a long time before David and Helen sighed. David said, “You don’t need to decide so quickly. We’ll give you a week to think it over.”
As I was about to leave, Nancy suddenly called out to me. She leaned close to me and whispered, “Nadia, have you been reborn too?”
