The Blind Boy I Picked Up Was the Mafia Don Chapter 04

Alexander opened the lunchbox and laid out the dishes on the little table set up in front of me.

Beef bourguignon, shepherd’s pie, mushroom soup-all smelling delicious, all my favorites.

But seeing them reminded me of the past.

Back then, I was so swamped with schoolwork that I lived on takeout.

Then I brought home a blind boy, and my already thin wallet got even thinner.

So I told him that being able to cook was the sexiest quality a man could have, and pushed him into the kitchen.

It was a mean joke, but he didn’t say no. He even seemed right at home in the kitchen, so much so that I almost forgot he was blind.

When Lucy heard about it, she sent me like five voice messages in a row. “Girl, have you lost your damn mind? He’s blind! Aren’t you afraid he’ll get revenge once he’s back on top? You’re such a coward normally, but with that blind boy, you’ve got all the nerve in the world.”

I weakly replied, “But he cooks so well.”

“Eat up, sweetheart. Just eat up. No one can out-eat you.”

Thinking back, maybe Alexander had reason to hate me and want payback.

I wasn’t exactly blameless.

“Can’t get used to the food after all those years abroad?”

I was lost in self-reflection when Alexander reached out to touch my hair. I dodged on instinct.

“Ma’am, you really don’t want me touching you anymore. You weren’t like this before.” His hand hung in the air, his low voice laced with something that sounded almost like hurt.

I was confused. Weren’t you the one who said you’d make me pay ten thousand times over?

So what was Alexander doing now?

Whining…?

Or was this some new kind of torture tactic?

Oh, I get it.

“You weren’t like this before” was really a veiled accusation about how I’d treated him back in the day.

The Don of a Mafia family sure can act. And he’s sharp, too-insulting me so politely.

Close call. If I were any worse at reading between the lines, I’d have thought he was sad because I was pulling away.

“Alexander, how did you even recognize me? You’ve never seen my face.”

I’d imagined that someday, with his Sherlock-level smarts, he might figure out who I was. But I never thought he’d spot me the very first time we met, right after I joined his company.

Since I couldn’t hide it anymore, I figured I’d at least find out how.

Lots of people have similar voices. Countless people have scars on their wrists. Seven years is a long time-enough to blur anyone’s memory.

I didn’t believe he could skip straight to certainty based on just that.

“Ma’am, if you think about the same person every single day, obsess over them for seven years, dream about them every night-don’t you think you’d recognize them when they finally stand in front of you?”

Alexander stared at me unblinking. His blue eyes were beautiful, perfectly clear, the kind of eyes that should be cold, but now they swirled with emotion, red-rimmed like he’d been crying, making your heart ache for him.

It was a far cry from the cold, untouchable image he showed the public.

He looked more like a pretty dog caught in the rain, desperate for his owner’s hug.

Suddenly, I understood what the nurse meant when she said he looked like he was about to shatter.

Unable to figure out what Alexander really wanted, my mind a mess, I just ducked my head and focused on the food.

At first, I worried he might have done something to it.

With his power and connections, I had no doubt that Lucy’s grandkids would be getting married and I’d still be floating in the Hudson River.

But after a few bites, I couldn’t stop. I cleaned every plate in no time.

Seven years in Germany, living on bread and potatoes, with killer coursework. When my tongue hit that steak, I almost cried.

After the last bite of pie, I choked. I grabbed the nearest cup and downed three big gulps before I realized it was Alexander’s.

The rim was all greasy from me.

“It’s yours now,” he said flatly.

Alexander had OCD. He hated sharing things with other people-especially women.

I think I pissed him off again…

“Sorry, I… I didn’t mean to…”

I was going to offer to buy him a new one, but when I saw the brand, I shut up.

My eyes moved from the water mark on the rim to Alexander’s face, then slowly down to his pink lips.

Remembering what he’d done right before I fainted, the question burned on my tongue.

“Hey, Alexander… did you actually…”

I couldn’t get the words “kiss me” out. My face was on fire. I wanted to bury my head in the pillow.

For the first time ever, I thought it might not be so bad if Alexander were still blind.

“Do you want me to have or not, huh?”

“Answer me, Ma’am.”

Alexander smiled lazily, his eyes blazing. He knelt on one knee by the bed, looked up at me, and his Adam’s apple bobbed.

Like he was offering himself up.

If I leaned down just a little, I could touch those lips.

Alexander. A seemingly cold, untouchable man who was actually a full-on incubus.

Seven years apart, and the guy had even changed species.

My phone rang, shattering the moment and snapping me out of his spell.
