The Day I Stopped Sending Him Sunsets Chapter 04
I leaned out of the bedroom.
Before I could even stand steady, Aaron rushed over like a gust of wind and slammed hard into my shoulder.
My whole body crashed into the wall, pain shooting through my back.
But he didn’t even look at me.
He rushed straight into the main bedroom and started rummaging through everything.
I held onto the wall and stood up.
“Aaron, what are you looking for?”
Without lifting his head, Aaron said urgently, “Hannah is getting an IV. I’m going to the hospital to stay with her.”
“The AC there is too cold. I need to bring a blanket. Where do we keep the blankets?”
I didn’t answer that question.
I only asked him, “Didn’t you say you were coming home early today to be with me?”
Aaron found the blanket and hurried past me again, searching for something else.
His tone became irritated.
“You’re pregnant, not deaf.”
“Didn’t I just say Hannah is on an IV? I don’t have time today. Another day.”
But Aaron, we didn’t have another day anymore.
I could no longer suppress the grievance and anger in my heart.
I broke down and questioned him.
“What if I insist on today?”
“Hannah is sick. She has parents. At worst, she has best friends and other friends. Aaron, what are you to her? Why are you abandoning your pregnant fiancée and rushing off to sit by her side?”
Aaron stopped moving because of my outburst.
He looked at me with disgust, as if I were an unreasonable lunatic.
“Hannah and I grew up together. She calls my mom her godmother. Is it really so wrong for me to take care of her as a friend?”
“Nora, can you calm down?”
“Stop overthinking everything just because you’re pregnant.”
After saying that, Aaron stuffed everything he had found into a travel bag and headed for the door.
I couldn’t help blocking his way.
“Aaron, don’t go.”
“Stay and listen to me, okay? I’m begging you.”
Aaron looked at my red-rimmed eyes.
He hesitated for a few seconds.
There was no tenderness in his gaze.
Only annoyance at being held up.
He stepped around me, even kicking aside the two suitcases blocking his way.
Then he waved impatiently.
“I really don’t know what you’re making a fuss about…”
“Fine, fine. I got it. I’ll come back early.”
Then he slammed the door and left.
Bang.
The apartment went quiet.
All I could hear was someone crying.
It was me.
I sat on the couch and waited for Aaron to come back.
One hour passed.
I sent him a text.
[Are you coming home?]
Read.
Aaron didn’t reply.
The second hour, I sent another text.
[I really have something important to tell you.]
Read.
The third hour.
[This is the last time. Are you not coming back?]
This time, the message wouldn’t even send.
Aaron had found me annoying and deleted me.
I stared at that glaring red exclamation mark and felt like a joke.
My tears had already stopped.
During the fourth hour, I sent Aaron one final text.
[Aaron, let’s break up.]
The moment it sent, the red exclamation mark appeared.
But I didn’t care anymore.
I pulled up my suitcases and walked out.
During the fifth hour, I was checking in at the boarding gate when I received a friend request from Aaron.
I tapped reject.
Then I posted on my feed.
[Aaron Whitman and I have broken up. Please take note.]
I turned on airplane mode and closed my eyes in my seat.
The plane slowly lifted into the air.
I fell asleep.
When the sun rose tomorrow, everything would begin again.
