The Heir He Left Behind Chapter 09

The Heir He Left Behind Chapter 09

I knew very little about Landon. Just that he probably worked in gray areas, too.

That afternoon, I overheard David on the phone.

“The Don is going to Mexico… Well, that’s all right. He has an heir now. That’s lucky.”

“If something happened to him… at least his bloodline would continue.”

By the end, his eyes were wet.

I walked back to the room in a daze. I found Landon and tugged his sleeve. “Please stay tonight. Keep me and the baby company.”

He paused, then pulled me into his arms.

For the past few days, I’d slept alone in the master suite. Landon had stayed in the guest room.

So when he held me, my body went stiff and tense.

He brushed the hair from my forehead and kissed me between my brows.

I took his hand and placed it on my belly. “Landon, feel the baby.”

His breath stopped. For a long moment, there was only silence.

Then his warm, dry hand finally rested on my stomach. With that warmth, I started to drift off.

“Cassie…” Just as I was about to fall asleep, he whispered my name and kissed the corner of my lips. “I’m

sorry.”

The night before Landon left for Mexico, he stayed in the master bedroom.

I was nearly five months pregnant then. With the stress gone and good care, I’d gained weight. My cheeks

had filled out.

But I could feel Landon holding back. He was young, strong, full of energy. Even pregnant, my figure hadn’t

changed much. My skin was smooth, my color good.

I slept a lot, but sometimes in that halfsleep, I’d hear him get up in the middle of the night to take a cold

shower.

So that night, when he kissed me goodnight, I hugged him back.

“Cassie, stop.” He caught my hand as it wandered over his body.

“Why not?”

He gave a helpless little laugh and kissed my fingertips. “You know why.”

“I’m almost five months. The doctor said it’s safe.” I gathered my courage and looked into his eyes. “Or do

you not want to?”

“I’m afraid of hurting you. And the baby.” He put his hand on my belly. “Go to sleep. Be good.”

I looked away and pressed my burning cheek to his chest. “The doctor said as long as you’re not too rough.”

He didn’t answer, but his arms tightened around me. His muscles went hard as stone.

I bit my lip and rolled over in his arms. “I looked it up online. Like this… it won’t press on my stomach.”

“Cassie Moretti.” His hot kisses rained down on my neck and shoulders. His voice went rough and low. “Who

taught you to seduce a man like this?”

“There are lots of articles online…”

He leaned down, his lips brushing my ear. “If it hurts, tell me.”

“So if I say it hurts, will you stop?”

I don’t know where I found the nerve to say that.

My face burned. I curled into a ball.

Landon wrapped his arms around me from behind, his hoarse voice whispering in my ear. “No.”

“But, Cassie… I’ll be gentle.”
